Second Round - Bottom Half Today saw a case of apprentice beating the master, as Marcuss Deane defeated Bruce Force. Deane took control from the off, in an encounter shadowed by Deane's leaving out of the Southern England Davis Cup team. Force tried to work his way back into the game early, but a couple of errors on serve in an otherwise decent serving match for him only sunk him deeper in the first set. Force did come back fighting though, but even a scoreline of 6-2 doesn't show how he got pushed around at times. The final set wasn't much to write home about for Force either. Though his intentions were good he tried to toe the line too much, leading to some very marginal calls in Deane's favour. Surely this result will have an impact on Davis Cup selection, as if there wasn't moaning about it from some parties (ok one) already. Victorian Alistair Son is out, not offering much resistance to rival Ritwick Chowdhuri. Fellow statesman Brett Hall did make it through however, winning an entertaining match against Jonny Ridd. Hall had a grand serve on in the match, though Ridd goes home disappointed after having played the better tennis of the day despite not taking his chances when he had them. Ginger Furball was the last man to secure a place in the quarters, somehow running through Truman Lee whilst relying on his second serve as the first one was faulty. Should probably go get a refund.
