Impact of the COVID-19 suspension on the NRL

We have some of the highest testing per capita in the world. I mean of course not everybody who should get tested is, but they do have to prioritise, as you said.

Everybody has wildly incorrect numbers apart from a few countries like South Korea, and we're on a better trajectory than what they were.

The high testing rate does give me confidence, but there is always the risk that people who have tested negative in the past eventually do contract the virus ... and that's assuming there's no false positives or negatives in the first instance.

I also think we've also been pretty lucky. Europe getting hit hard before us opened a lot of people's eyes here so even individuals have been taking it seriously and have managed to heed to the messages of those before us.

Our benchmark should be how other Western countries respond and we're definitely leading the way as far as that goes. Comparing our response to Asian countries is stupid. 1) They're a lot more sinophobic than Western countries and the geographical proximity factors in. The Japanese, Koreans and Taiwanese don't like and don't trust China. They didn't give a shit about what the WHO said, they have their own information to go off and they knew this was an issue before everyone else did.

Secondly, they're cultural and institutionally better prepared for these things anyway. The people wear masks and have very strong hygiene practices, but critically are collectivist cultures with subservient constituents compared to more individualistic Westerners. They also have incredibly developed and technical manufacturing sectors and pharma/biotech, which in a crisis is useful given there could be supply shortages. It's no coincidence that countries like Spain and Italy who have old populations and have sold their manufacturing to foreigners are struggling, while Germany who has an equally old population but has retained strong manufacturing capabilities and strong investments in biotech is managing to cope better.

I don’t care for the politics being discussed here but that’s a Furphy. You’ll never stop uncontrollable bushfires but sensible hazard reduction goes a long way to saving houses in the scrub.

This is you coming off as one of the clowns using a disaster to push your political agenda. If the PM can't go on holiday while there is something going on, he basically can't take a day off. IIRC, he was on holiday right at the beginning of the fires, and returned when the severity went up and after twitter got upset.

He would have been in interactions like that all day every day. Of course the media are going to run all the negative footage. I saw a bunch of videos on social media doing the rounds that never got a mention on MSM.

I slightly disagree with Lukic saying our benchmark should be other Western countries rather than Asia. Deferential population or not our testing capacity needs to follow SK and Singapore. They're the ones truly beating it. And fortunately, our testing rate is up there with them.

The arguments about an LNP government going all 'socialist' lol, is sort of a secondary, though still important, question to me at this point.

Be very surpised if we come out of this with Greenberg still in charge.

Bloke seems to be less popular than Scomo at the moment

We're doing a good job controlling the spread or being lied to very well. I think there's a good chance the NRL is back in action by July.

Given the WHO was saying in mid Jan that there was no evidence of human to human transmission in mid January that would've been written off as racist etc and would never have gone through.

You had NYC health commissioner Oxiris Barbot tweeting:

'As we gear up to celebrate the #LunarNewYear in NYC, I want to assure New Yorkers that there is no reason for anyone to change their holiday plans, avoid the subway, or certain parts of the city because of #coronavirus.'

    &

'I want to be clear, this is about a virus, not a group of people. There is NO excuse for anyone to discriminate or stigmatize people of Asian heritage. We are here today to urge all New Yorkers to continue to live their lives as usual.'

    On February 3rd.

So you can just imagine the outrage there would have been if an Australian Liberal led government tried to enforce a China ban. Would've made for soem greta 'I told you so' moments now though.

Going to be very interesting what the Royal Commmsion finds. While people were blowing up about scomo not telling the fires to stop, the biggest new years eve damage in my little suburb (Conjola Park) was supposedly kicked off from some back burning and incendiary charges dropped West/North west of us in the days or two leading up to New years eve, where we had a predicted 44 degree day with howling westerlies. Apparently this back burn wasn't signed off one by one of the higher ups either.

Added to that the RFS fire prediction spread map didn't even have our suburb listed as 'potential ember attack', so nearly everyone was very lax about it all because 'RFS said its fine, so its fine'. 89 of the 260 odd houses in our suburb burned down and there were was one strike team in the area as they'd all headed an hour north to await the southerly change. Serious fuck up from the authorities.

As for footy, just turn the whole season into a run it straight challenge with one player frome ahc team. Kikau is Penrith's nomination.

In a time like this, that is thread worthy and I want bookies odds.

Reckon I’d back Nigel Plum in defence over anyone I’ve seen.

If we are bringing old players in to contention, the list is narrowed down to 1.

NRL to resume on May 28. That seems very ambitious to me.

Yeah I really can't see how they make that work unless they do the whole isolated competition idea (where the players/staff are shipped out somewhere and kept away from everyone else).

  17. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

It really isn't that hard. If any player doesn't want to be quarantined, then he is allowed to ask for a release from his contract. I'm sure every single player will be keen to do it if it gets them their coin.
