2020 NRL Season

  1. Julian BJ Taylor

The thing is every game is worth the same amount of points and of the top 6 teams (huge gulf between them and the rest) he was far and away the most important individual player. He played 10 matches post the Josh Hodgson injury and earned the 3 points in 6 of them. I'm not arguing he's a better player than those on your list (though he's obviously eons ahead of Clint Gutherson) but Cleary and Tedesco were partnered with some pretty hot attacking players throughout the course of the year when Wighton was not. And there's no point mentioning RTS. He played in a shit team so he'll never go close in a 3-2-1 system.

Tbf Taumalolo and RTS did win it in pretty average teams but yeah, Wighton winning makes sense when u consider how the award is designed.

MF I think the problem is there's a perception gap between what people think the Dally M is and what it actually is. Like Julian said he wasn't/isn't necessarily the best player, but he was the most important to Canberra, especially in games they won. The fact a player could be the best on ground by a hair in 9 games and have 11 diabolical games but still win the Dally M shows it's not a real MVP/best player in the comp award.

Fairly confident Melbourne get up on Sunday, they attack too well on both edges not to have success against some pretty flimsy Panthers edge defence, especially Stephen Crichton.

I'm expecting it to be a cracking game though, typical with the rest of the season some massive momentum swings.

    Munster CCM

I can see CCM either doing a Thurston and going to Smith no matter how he plays(Most likely gonna be a good game from him) or give it to a flavor of the month like Hughes/Papa.

I thought about putting money on Smith just for this reason but I don't feel like there's the same level of romanticism around Cameron Smith as there was someone like Jonathan Thurtson, Smith just isn't that likeable. I also tend to think he gets his biggest plaudits when something in the game goes wrong and he is seen to be stepping up (like Munster goes off injured) or if they're having to build a comeback and he kicks a 40/20 that leads to one of the comeback tries.

Nathan Cleary wouldn't be a bad bet if you think the Panthers are going to get up for similar reasons, the whole father/son hoo-ha

I think Luai is good value for Panthers, he was $20+. He has been going well, and he is starting to get a lot of hype. Already seen 2-3 stories about him this week.

I dont doubt the Dally M system is flawed. We've all been saying that for years but even in spite of the flaws, i still dont see how Wighton wins it. To me he has become the textbook example of a player who gets enormous praise for bog average performances.

All started last year in Origin and the flavour of the month thing just hasnt gone away. Kid can play no doubt he was far from the best and fairest.

Yeo or Munster for Clive Churchill

Yeo's transformation at lock has been extraordinary.

Used to swear the guy was a woeful first grader. Just got this uncanny agility that a lot of 2nd rowers who move into the middle seem to have of just making these linebreaks out of no where that look extremely soft but must be just down to a little bit of agility & acceleration they've retained from their days and centres/2nd rowers.

I have a sneaky tenner on JFH, Luai and NAS. Will probably go a bit harder on Munster if he stays around the $10 mark.

Because I am a N00b nrl fan and only following for a few years this will be my first grand final have watched. Looking forward to it. Am hoping panthers get up.

I find myself hating the Storm as a team a lot less this year, they actually seem to be playing some decent entertaining footy for a change and noticeably less shit going on in the ruck in terms of trying to wrestle and slow down the play the ball.

On the other hand Luai & Naden are two of the biggest twats in the game, but I really like their forward pack and it’d be great to see an Easts junior lift the NRL trophy.

So I find myself not really caring who wins the game, just hope it’s a close contest.

    Final's day!
Can't wait. On at 9.30pm New Zealand time. It is 1:3pm right now.

7:30pm kick off on a Sunday with no labour day public holiday to follow is so lame.

The rain tonight makes this game a little more hard to predict, I don’t necessarily prescribe to the theory that it will favour the Storm. I think the Panthers have an equal if not better long kicking game & seem to rely less on expansive ball movement to score points.

Although I always think this late in the season and at this level it affects the outcome of the game far less.

  16. Magic AJ Parker

Naden dropped completely to 18th man. May starts, Mitch Kenny on the bench.

We have labour day tomorrow. Shame you don't.

  18. AVA T Delonge

We do on the normal GF weekend (start of October). The delay in the season shifted it away unfortunately.
