If anyone was Mitchell Pearce-like on Wednesday night it was Nathan Cleary. For someone touted as the best player in the game he sure loves to go missing in an Origin decider. 0/3 wins. Has about 6 try assists in 16 Origins. Decent argument to pick Moses over him after getting it done in the decider in Brisbane and Game 1 this year.

Their record with Moses in the last two years is 3/3. Their record without Moses is 0/3.

    Pretty strong circumstantial evidence.

Cleary and Moses did well together I thought. Though they should play Moses in the 7. Cleary needs less responsibility at in Origin matches IMO.

I'd then ditch Young, King, Stefano and Leniu; Barnett and Murray should walk back into the side and I'd be bringing in Keon and May. I'd even consider booting Edwards and playing Trell at 1, then bring Best into the centres, who is 2/2 and played well at this level.

Cleary/Moses is definitely the combination going forward, but Moses is the key. His long kicking and ball running is superb.

I thought Edwards was good in Game 1 and ineffectual in 2 and 3. Time for Pap imo. Need some real spark at the back. In reality tho, no fullback is doin much with the way the halves played. Robson did fuck all as well except tackle blokes off the ball.

It is actually funny that Qld only won 2 of the 6 halves played. Daley talking about needing to start much better after being down 26-6 in game 2 at halftime, and then being down by the exact same margin in game 3, is comical.

You got the sense that he, Phil Gould and a good portion of NSW wrote off the Game 2 loss as an aberration caused by the referee. Didnt seem too concerned about the horrendous goal line defence which reared its head again.

Yeah the repeat of the first half is ultimately a culmination in what was a coaching disasterclass from NSW (not just Daley as there's a pretty large contingent of well respected staff). The NSW use of the bench was awful.
    • Not only was there no creativity in the use of the bench but it was basically unchanged from Game 2. There's a total reluctance to do something like a late change to put some doubt in to QLD - stems from the selections as well - the non-selection of Koloamatangi meant the bench lacked versatility.
    • When NSW are down 20-0 the decision to bring Watson on - is essentially putting an average hooker on to replace a slightly above average hooker and thinking it will change the game. Put him on at lock or something and start moving it around with some pace.
    • Even the rotations of the middle. Everyone knew QLD put Papa out there to take the sting out of Haas before they brought on Carrigan and Collins. You'd have to consider just reversing that by starting King and Utoikamanu and have Haas come on fresh and rip in for a 40 minute stint and if needed you can bring him back on with 10 to go.

Agree with most of that except I think you always have to start Haas. Olakau'atu and Koloamatangi should feel very unlucky to not have featured in this series at all.

Speaking of rotations and pack composition, I wanna give a rap to Slater for finally benching Carrigan and Nanai. Our rotation worked so much better just having Loiero tackle everything (48 with 0 missed) like a traditional lock, and utilising Carrigan as a genuine prop. His output of 140m and 20 tackles in only 34 minutes vindicated those of us who thought he was playing way too many minutes and having to do way too many tackles. He's better suited as a relief prop at this level.

And I've gotta eat some humble pie about Kurt Capewell. He was actually really good, very solid without being brilliant.

I can't for life of me work out what the thinking was with those stupid inside balls, horrible tactics

  8. Wilson SB Wilson

Picking a back rower on the bench and forcing him to play middle is an awful selection tactic and needs to stop.

Talakai would be the perfect person for a position like that on the bench being able to cover middle, back row and centre

    And Robson is pure ass.

Api or Brailey next year thanks

You mean you werent impressed with Hudson Young's 8 runs for 47m? lol the best part was Cleary getting tackled on 5th (again) and watching Young at first receiver opt to kick himself rather than pass to Luai, puts in a dud grubber and then drops the ricochet all in one movement. Capped off by Yeo's wasted challenge on the play, it was satirical at that point.

  11. Cribbage RG Cribb

They should both be playing IMO, but yeah Moses should be picked ahead of him. I'd have Moses/Munster as the Australian halves too.

It was strange to see Cleary get caught on tackle 4 a few times from really quite nothing runs.

I still think NSW are missing a trick by starting Yeo. I feel his ball playing and general faffing around doesn't translate to the origin arena in the same way it holds up the defence at club level, especially early when things are physical and the line speed is up. I wonder if it just cuts down time for the halves/receivers. He's too good not to play, but I think its a better fit for him to come on around the 20-30 minute mark at some tiring legs. When you look at the 2024 series, he came off the bench in all 3 games.

    Think I'd go something like:

    1. Latrell
    2. To'o
    3. Crichton
    4. Best/Staggs
    5. Nawaqanitawase
    6. Moses
    7. Cleary
    8. May
    9. Egan/Api
    10. Haas
    11. Olakuatu
    12. Crichton
    13. Koloamatangi

    14. Api/Watson
    15. Martin
    16. Yeo
    17. Leniu

Thats a good side and I like Martin on the bench instead of starting. His defence isnt up to it.

Latrell, Turbo and Drinkwater offer more with the pass than Tedesco/Edwards/Pap but I'm not sure they're up to it positionally and physically for various reasons. Latrell, when he's in the mood, is a different story, as he can be Hayne 2014-like sometimes.

  14. Sultan Pepper HG Emm

The big one for me with Latrell is if he's fit, if he plays nearly every game and full pre season, I'd lock him in. Disrupted then I'd be having him at centre and then probably go for Drinkwater/Pap. I love Edwards but I just think he's lost a step or two, similar to Tedesco. I agree that Drinkwater is more likely to take advantage of the half chances with ball in hand, while Paps I think can be more damaging than Edwards around the ruck.

I always wonder about Drinkwater in the 14. I really rate him as a link man, but agree with your physicality point.

I'd even consider making Latrell captain with Yeo bench.

It's a weird situation for NSW in a way because on the one hand the scoreline really flattered them. Factoring in To'o's consolation try in the dying seconds, or even just Holmes slipping over on the conversion, I mean they basically lost 13+ in a decider at home. That's pretty atrocious when you have the better team. On the other hand, I dont think they need many changes. Barnett and Moses should come straight back in. But it's really more of an attitude and effort thing for mine. They just didnt play hard enough, especially on their try line.

Personnel changes wont fix it if their desire to win doesnt match the opposition.

Agree re: Drinky being best link player - it's a shame that the Cows' haven't hit that 2022 form. I think its particularly important to have that playmaking at fullback particularly with the stiffness in this spine.

Might be controversial as a Souths fan but I wouldn't pick Trell again. His defensive efforts aren't there and QLD had a lot of success attacking that edge all series. I also think you give To'o a lift with a more energetic centre who takes more carries etc out of our end.

I'd be playing Moses at 7. I know the number on your back doesn't mean a whole lot these days. But it's symbolic that it's Moses' team. Free Cleary up and take the pressure of directing the side off of him.

Look back to the 23 GF. Panthers had all the possession and luck in the first half, yet only had a 2 point lead. Then it was all Broncos for the first 20mins of the 2nd half. Nath seemed lost; up until Ivan sent Cogger on to play first receiver and steer the side around. Cleary was able to play a little wider and had less hands-on pressure of running the side, and we know how that ended up. Blues could pull off the same thing.

It'll be interesting to see what Slater does next year and the form of our outside backs. Holmes and Tualagi can fight it out for right side wing. Toia and Coates aint going anywhere. I'm not fully sold on Shibisaki just yet but his tackle breaking ability and big body helped against Crichton. Needs to work on his defence to the outside.

  19. Wilson SB Wilson

Egan would be lucky to carry Blayke Brailey’s stool sample. Brailey should be a walk up start for the 9 jersey.

Liam Martin needs to be flicked into the sun from this team as well. Cool he hits hard, but he does sweet fuck all.

  20. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Nah Martin had a poor series with the ball but he was completely misused by Daley. The guy is an impact player at this level and should be on the bench. 2023 series proved that. Bloke was Menzies-like off the pine.
