    Chapter 1

Ames Taylor crouched into his compact, solid stance. He looked up at the intimidating quick who was just starting his run-up. He didn't feel intimidated.

Taylor was that guy who you would back to face out anybody. Regardless of whether the bowler was delivering 80kph dibbly-dobblers or 160kph missiles, you knew you could rely on his stodgy forward-defense to block them out. He had the knack of remaining patient, and when presented with a loose delivery, he would duly dispatch it. Some moaned at him for his slow scoring rate, but they all knew that their team was all the better for his contributions. They had many flashy batsmen who could score a quick-fire 50 on occasion, but the common denominator of all of those stunning knocks was one Ames Taylor, anchoring the innings with his insurmountable grit.

The express bowler, a towering brute of a man by the name of Lucas Schaw, thundered towards the crease. Upon reaching his delivery stride, he reached for the sky with his right hand as if trying to grab the sun for extra power. He yanked his right arm down and catapulted the ball towards Taylor's off-stump with his muscular left arm.

As Schaw let the ball go, Taylor's body tensed up. He immediately picked the line of flight and aligned himself with the hustling cork. He stepped confidently towards the ball and, just as the ball reached him, softened his hands. The ball rolled meekly into the side-netting, barely a metre away from him. Taylor looked up at Schaw, and he could see the annoyance in the bowler's face. He felt satisfied - whilst many batsmen found a rush in dispatching fast bowlers with a dashing cover-drive or a well-timed pull, Taylor most enjoyed calmly blocking them out. He'd learnt by now that fast bowlers most hate it when batsmen show no fear or uncertainty. A fast bowler likes the batsman showing emotion and risk. That’s why Taylor didn’t even give him a glimmer of it.

"Okay Taylor, that's enough for today!" called club captain Meer Kat. Taylor always found his name Meer Kat to be amusing. He'd always assumed that Kat's parents had realised that he was a waste of oxygen at birth, and had therefore given him a funny name to make the best of a bad situation. Because, in Taylor's opinion, Meer Kat was a terrible, terrible situation.

Kat hated Taylor. Passionately. Taylor was a natural leader, and the players flocked to Ames both on and off the field for advice, a chat, or to vent their issues. It wasn't an attempt to undermine Kat, it was just Ames' natural leadership coming to the fore. Of course, Kat didn't see it that way. Kat constantly criticised Taylor for his slow run-rate, and had gone as far as to drop him down the order in the past until he improved his scoring rate. After a mass objection by the team, Taylor was reinstated to his position as opening batsman. Of course, the petition only fueled Kat's feelings of hatrid towards Taylor.

Taylor joined the circle of players around Kat, and started unpadding as he listened to the team-talk. Kat informed them about their match against Fairview CC, and summarised the pitch, outfield and opponents. Then he spoke about team selection.

"I'll be making one change from last week," started Kat. "Ames will be sitting out. His form's gone a bit pear-shaped, so until he convinces me otherwise, Palmes will be taking his spot."

You could have heard a pin drop. Even Palmes looked dismayed. The players all knew that it was a decision based on personal feelings. Ames wasn't happy.

    "Bad form?" he asked.

"Yep. You went out for 9 last match. That's just not acceptable, and you know it."

"That's just one match!" argued Taylor. His teammates were a bit taken aback - until that point, Taylor was known to ignore Kat's bias. "I scored fifties in the two games before that!"

"Listen here, buddy," replied Kat coldly. "It's my decision. I'm not changing it; not this time. If you don't like it, you're welcome to leave."

    "Well then, cheers."

Taylor picked up his kit, which was now lying at his feet, and strode to his kitbag. He quickly packed the kit away before picking up the bag and walking towards his car. As he purposefully walked straight through the circle of players, he brushed Kat with his kit bag. Kat glared at him, but Taylor didn’t turn back. Reaching his Volkswagen Polo, Taylor stuffed his kit into the back seat. As he got into the driver's seat, he finally looked back at Kat. Kat met his glare with a cold, smug smirk. Their eyes locked for about 10 seconds before Kat pulled away and attempted to continue his team talk. The rest of the players tried to act as if they were paying attention, but in truth they were all listening to the sounds of Taylor's car slowly pulling away.

As Taylor turned onto the main-road, realisation of what had just happened started to kick in. His mind replayed the happenings over and over. Eventually he came to a conclusion. He had passed the point of no return - it was time to turn to the next page of his cricket life.
