The worst thing you can do to a out of form middle order batsman is make him ****ing open. I know you're not doing well now, but opening the batting just takes the chance of you getting a big score from small to 0. It's a ridiculously bad idea.
He actually succeeded in the first innings. His job was just to soak up balls early on, and he did that in the first dig. Failed second dig though, indeed.

Yeah but he's bound to fail there 9 times out of 10, so all it achieves is giving the opening bowlers confidence way to early in the match with such an early cheap wicket.
