I welcome Gillett being considered a genuine impact second rower. But Te'o and McQueen are both directly and indirectly occupying spots that should be taken by props; Shillington and Hannant. It's still a better side than in Game I because we have Parker starting, and we have Papalii and Cherry-Evans in there. But yeah, it could've been a lot better.

End of the day, it comes back to how we play. The mobility tactic can work but it depends on how we start. If we get forward through the middle and defend better there's no reason why we can't exploit them through the middle as we did in the second half of Game I. I think we have a better chance of doing that with Parker starting and playing, in all likelihood, 80 minutes. Myles should go better than what Shillington did in Game I so I'm not overly concerned.

Who are our props after 20mins?

    Thaiday and Parker?

I'd say Myles and Parker will play the first 40 with Thaiday pushing up front when Scott comes off after 25. I think we'll see Parker push up at some point though. I don't really have a problem with that.

There are 240 minutes of middle-third to fill aside from Smith who will play 80. Myles will play 60. Parker will play 70-80. Scott will play 55-60. Thaiday will play 30-35. Cherry-Evans or Cronk will play 15. That leaves 10 minutes remaining. So one of the players listed will either play the larger estimation, or we may see one of the three right side second rowers on the bench, play lock at some point. Probably Gillett, maybe Papalii.

Could you play Cronk at lock to slot DCE into the halves or would you have to bench Cronk?

    Fixed.

  7. AVA T Delonge

Very much doubt Cronk will be benched.

 So you've gone with even less props than Game I!?!?!

    Bahahahaha.

Parker and/or Thaiday playing front row is fine but - again - it means all four of your props are starting and none of them are on the bench. Furthermore, who goes to lock when Parker is playing prop? Gillett? lol.

I don't think he's ever played there. Melbourne used to shift Smith to lock and play their utility out of dummy half. Cronk is strong defensively, but I think too many cooks would spoil the broth. If you've got Cronk, DCE, Thurston & Smith out there all at once, he won't get a chance to do shit.

Either bench Cronk towards the end of the first half, or don't use DCE at all unless required through injury. DCE can't play hooker can he?

That's a distinct possibility. Cherry-Evans may come on to play halfback with Cronk moving to lock. I'ts unlikely though IMO. I think Cherry will just come on at lock and play as an alternate half/hooker ala Cronk during the Lockyer years.

    So Queensland's bench is:

    14. Halfback
    15. Right side second rower
    16. Right side second rower
    17. Right side second rower

That's worse than what NSW did under Bellamy and Stuart. That's just ridiculous. Not saying they won't win anyway but they've not given themselves the best chance of doing so at all. At least in Game I when Parker was on the bench, you had another middle third player to come on.

And the funny thing is the fact that the bloke you actually have starting at right side second row is a prop.

Pick three right side second rowers in the team, start none of them.

    I hope that's a troll.

If it ends up going down to a decider surely Mal will wise up and have at least one prop on the bench.

I don't think that matters though because Parker is probably going to play 80. And whatever time he doesn't play, Cherry-Evans will fill in.

Depends how this side goes. If we beat NSW well, or even just beat them, he may well keep the same side. Just hope Shillington and Hannant play well from now until then. (Or that Te'o or McQueen do an ACL).

Nup, it's really not. Obviously, halves are more important to a team's creativity than second rowers are. Which you probably interpreted me as disagreeing with. That would be absurd. However, you need to have a creative player to stand at second receiver (or third receiver on long shifts when the halves combine) on each side of the field to have a functional attacking unit IMO. Your choices are

    1. Don't run split halves.
    2. Have your lock and props do a lot of ball-playing at the line and push your halves wider so they can create from second receiver a lot.
    3. Have a creative fullback to get the ball at second receiver.
    4. Have creative second rowers to get the ball at second receiver.

    And no-one chooses #1.

You could have the two most creative halves in the world but if their fullback was Minichiello and their second rowers were Hoffman and Creagh then everything they tried to create would fall to pieces two passes wide of the ruck.

Yeah, but Myles will probably get get less minutes if he's starting at prop rather than lock though.

No matter which way you look at it - in Game I, you picked four middle third forwards (and Thaiday). In Game II, you've picked three middle third forwards (and Thaiday).

That's not true IMO. Dragons of 2010 to deny. They had Boyd at fullback with Creagh and Scott on the fringes. None of them are creators. ANd it's not like the halves relied on their pack ala the Dogs of last year.
