Siosaia Vave (Manly) - Was a dominant junior who never really transferred those performances to first grade. Looked ok when he played but always a touch of the pace. He's been one of Manly's top 3 forwards over the first 4 rounds adding power running in the middle third that they lack with Taupau used on the edge. Looks set to finally cement his spot as a career first grader. As per usual, for a big forward it has been put down to getting fit and losing weight. Hopefully he keeps the form up.

Sam Mataora (Newcastle) - Very similar story to Vave, but has been even more impressive. Was a gun junior second rower but really struggled when beefed up to play prop. Always looked like he had it in him but carried a few too many kilos and lacked the spark he had as a lighter backrower. He has been nothing short of tremendous this year though and has become the leader and best forward in the Newcastle pack.

Young Tonumaipea (Storm) - A left field pick, but 4 games into the season and it looks like he's nailed down the 2nd wing spot at Melbourne. His position at the start of the season looked well and truly up in the air. Slater was back, Munster was at centre and Hawkins, Kenner, Blair and Scott were also vying for the one spot. Now Slater's gone and Bellamy looks well and truly settled on the energetic Samoan. 2/3 full seasons as a Melbourne winger can well and truly set you up for a good career.

Yeah good to see some island boys kicking some skinny white Aussie ass.

Want to give Chad Townsend some love in this thread. He's been fucking brilliant the first 4 rounds.

Tedesco has been one of the best in the comp imo. Aaron Woods has been immense for the Tigers too. Didn't watch the Eels game but couldnt quite believe they went scoreless at home in the weekend the way those two have been playing.

Yeah they're really breaking out this season aren't they!

Woods' output has actually regressed a touch.

Well Tedesco defo is. Playing himself into an Origin jersey.

Wilson mentioned Townsend so I didn't think they needed to be rookies.

And I wasn't really suggesting Woods was a "breakout player" tbh, it was more of a mention tacked onto Tedesco. But I dunno how his "output has actually regressed" when he's averaging 194 metres a game as opposed to 181 last season. His tackle count per game is about the same.

Not one player I mentioned is a rookie.

James Tedesco doesn't belong in this thread. Maybe 12 months ago.

Here I am trying to contribute to your thread and you wanna be that petty? Wow

Townsend's been one of the form halves of the comp. Much different to the bit player and second fiddle he's been in the past. Defs worthy of this thread and much different to Tedesco.

Tedesco has been mentioned for NSW for a few years now, he has just been injured repeatedly. Hardly a breakout player for this season.

OK but he was more than decent for the Warriors tbh. I'm not at all surprised he's doing well at the Sharks.

(Anyone will play second fiddle to Johnson btw ;))

OK OK it was a shit post then. I get it.

How bout someone else actually mention some other names then instead of jumping on my back?

The difference in being boring. The NRL has got enough of artificial humble rookies.

Hymal Hunt and Cody Walker appear to have cracked it at Bunnies.

Kenny Edwards has been gun for Parra too.

  16. Julian BJ Taylor

    Yeah good mentions all round.

I'm not sold on Cody Walker though.

  17. jazman84 JM Eightyfour

Yeh, me neither. Though I think he has taken control of the playmaking duties in Reynolds' absence fairly well considering he wasn't in their top 17.

  18. Wilson SB Wilson

Cody's bubble will burst. Fuck he's bad in defence.

  19. Julian BJ Taylor

That and there's no spot for him in the team at full strength.
