I know Roberts is a crap pick but he's probably my famous non-SA player and I've already given in to the fact that I don't have sufficient knowledge to dominate the draft.

To me he was the best centre in the world at the 2011 WC but I only imagine from not hearing much about him recently that he isn't quite as much of a star as he appeared to me. Not saying he wouldn't be picked - just imagine he wouldn't have been a guy I couldn't have picked up a round or two later. Then again I actually have nfi.

 

He wasn't his usual self over the Six Nations but he's just been finishing a medicinal degree recently anyway and hardly training as a result, AFAIK. Pretty much a unanimous choice for the Lions.

 

Honestly, I would have appeared a prick at the time but I genuinely would say that around the 2011 WC I'd have had him easily in the best 5 players in the world. It would probably be ridiculous, but he just looked so, so good.

That also probably had something to do with me falling in love with the Welsh team in general. North, Warburton etc :fap:

 

Yeah well Warburton can't even get in the Welsh team these days.

 

Yeah I know, at the time he was pretty gun. Hence me thinking Roberts might also have just been in a hot run of form, and is now considered nothing special.

 

Roberts is awesome, but he is a "crash ball" centre which always sees him being compared to guys like SBW, Frans Steyn, Nonu, Manu Tuilagi etc, and that I reckon is the cause of him not catching the shine he deserves. But, as said, by no means a crap player.

The Welsh team for me in general are made up of guys like that, brilliant rugby players, but when compared to other similar players, failing in comparison for ex: Warburton - McCaw, Lydiate - Schalk Burger, AW Jones - Matfield/Sharpe, Felatau - Parisse/Read, Roberts - SBW etc.

The only players they have who I really rate are Adam Jones, Halfpenny, North and Mike Phillips.
