My character background for you guys. I've just made up the names of towns, Escath can change/fit them in as he sees fit. Evend Born in the slums of Rockford Harbour. His father, Harrard a street enforcer for one of the major criminal merchants of Rockford would only earn enough to support his drinking habits. His mother Esmere would beg throughout the day, trying to find enough to feed herself and Evend. This was a “rough” upbringing, and Evend became a rough kid as a result. Emulating his father in beating up smaller kids and taking what he wanted, but he had the uncanny ability to stay out of danger. He was always amazed at the ships in the harbour, the people they would bring, from foreign humans to Dwarves, Elves and even the odd Halfling or Dragonborn. Evend began hiding out in sailors taverns listening to stories of far off lands, and the riches that could be found. The desire to explore the world and find a way to escape the life of squalor began to grow, until eventually Evend found a ship willing to take him as a deck boy. The Rosethorn, a merchant ship that carried spices, there he spent years learning the basics of sailing, navigation and haggling. And also began to love the games of chance sailors played and the discovery of new places. Eventually at the age of 18 he was able to earn a decent wage as the Deck Cadet (third in command) of the Whispering Shadow, another merchant ship. This one however dealt in the illegal things of the world, and it was here that Evend’s ability to sense trouble and opportunity paid the greatest dividends. Allowing him to direct the captain (Isling Seffold) the safest path, or the wealthiest buyer. His ability allowed him great freedom for a sailor, Isling allowed him months off at a time back home at Rockford. Where Evend found a wife (Serena) and had twins (Beo (boy) and Leahart (girl), named for great mythical explorers). While Evend wage was ample enough, he still remembered his own poor upbringing and determined not to have his children live in that world always sent any extra money he found to them via messenger. Even going as far as to take from the extremely valuable cargos the Whispering Shadow at great personal risk when he felt he could. Then during one great voyage across the Ocean a massive storm tore the ship apart. Despite the best efforts the ship began to sink to the bottom and there was no escape. Evend along with the rest of the crew went to the bottom. And there as he drowned and felt the crush of the depths around him Evend threw out a prayer to anyone or anything to help him. His final thought was that there would be nobody to her him in the ocean. But there was. Evend like most thought after death he would be Judged. But instead he stood before a god seated on a pearl throne, in an underwater cavern. And there the god presented himself as Poseidon (very original) the reawakened God of the Oceans, Seas and Rivers. Betrayed by his old Herald, Umberlee (Tempest God, god of seas) whom with the help of Talos (Tempest God, god of Storms) trapped him so they could capture the souls of those that die at sea to create water demons and great storms. Poseidon charged Evend with becoming his new voice, to announce his return to the world. Offer his blessing to those who would seek safe passage over the seas to protect those souls of board from becoming Talos and Umberlee’s servants of evil. In return Evend would return to the living and would be given the tools necessary. Poseidon’s Holy symbol a driftwood amulet shaped like a trident. And a driftwood quarterstaff which so long as I call his name would become magical and give great strength to my attacks. (casting Shillelagh) Evend accepted and awoke on a sand-bar unknown to Evend. Found by a passing ship who believed him to be a half-drowned mad-man after hearing his story and seeing his now sickly drowned appearance, he was taken and put off at the nearest port of call. After some time thinking Evend realised that blind preaching would not help his cause, he would need to show by example that Poseidon had returned and what better way than by using his powers. Unfortunately nobody would take him on a ship while he continued to demand the crew receive a blessing from some heathen god (Priests of Umberlee offer “blessings” for safe passage for a price). So his only option that would allow him to both travel around the world to preach and continue to earn enough gold to send to his family is adventuring. Hoping his divine powers and old abilities would be able to fit in he joins a group hoping not only can he fulfill his oath to Poseidon but can also support and eventually find a way back to his family.
