GoT Is Shit (Spoilers S1-S4)

I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag personally, but it definitely had a LOT of epic scenes which probably makes it more memorable. Seasons 2 & 3 > 4 IMO but I can see why most people might disagree.

MF, what are your thoughts on The Wire?

 

I haven't actually seen The Wire, I'm afraid. I hear good things but then again I hear some of the same people saying GOT is the best thing since sliced bread. Would you recommend it?

 

Let me put it to you this way. I started watching The Wire partially to serve as a notch on my belt that I'd seen it so when rabid Wire fans discussed it I could say "seen it, X was better". Instead it turned me into that asshole that thinks shows like GoT, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, and Mad Men represent the pinnacle of TV but the best they can ever hope to accomplish is be a distant second to The Wire.

Despite being so entrenched in reality and social commentary, it is very accessible with memorable characters and the only people I know who went away from watching it fit into one of two categories:

A) People with short attention spans/busy lifestyles that only have time for shows that offer instant gratification

B) People who found the content too real (I had coworkers give me back the DVDs for this reason)

Think of a great novel where the story has layers upon layers and in which every detail matters. That's the Wire.

I have nothing but high, high praise for it, and it's one of two shows where I actually own all of the seasons (Arrested Development is the other) and I have watched all the seasons 4 times over the years. Don't just take my word for it though.

I've been known to do that. I do have a bit of the gadfly or the contrarian in me, I suppose. I try, however, to keep one of Orwell's best phrases in mind when judging a piece of work; win the battle against your own prejudices. That's partly why I didn't stop after one episode or one season. If I'm going to be critical about a show I at least owe it the courtesy of actually watching it properly and giving it a fair go. Some of the conclusions I drew after watching said one episode held throughout, and some didn't. I do think the show is better than I'd initially supposed but I maintain it still isn't my cup of tea and not anything like as good as some of its admirers incessantly insist.

 

Please don't do that.
