Parramatta should be upgraded IMO. Building anything of note further West than Parra would be a mistake IMO.
New stadiums to be built in Parramatta and Moore Park under plans unveiled by NSW Government By State Political Reporter Sarah Gerathy The New South Wales Government has announced a billion dollar overhaul of the state's sporting stadium, including plans to build new stadiums at Parramatta and Moore Park. Premier Mike Baird said it is the biggest investment in sporting and major event infrastructure in NSW since the Sydney Olympics. The first project in the package will be a new 30,0000 seat stadium at Parramatta in Sydney's south, which would be completed by 2019. The plan also includes a new rectangular stadium at Moore Park in Sydney's east, seating between 50,000 to 55,000 people, a new indoor arena near the CBD, an outer western Sydney sporting venue and the completion of the SCG upgrade. The Government is looking to acquire the lease of Olympic Stadium to redevelop it, which could potentially include building a retractable roof. It said $600 million has already been set aside for the package as part of Rebuilding NSW and it will allocate more funding in the future. Mr Baird said the package is dependent on sporting codes agreeing to put on major match on in NSW and he wants the NRL grand final to remain in Sydney. "The longer we can keep it here the better and the critical part of this process is to ensure, whether it be the NRL, whether it be the soccer, whether it be Rugby Union, we're going to ensure this city will get the best events it can for the next generation," he said.
- 30k at Parra -Re-doing Allianz - Making ANZ rectangular and capacity of 70k or so NRL have pledged a fuckload of games at these stadiums every year. Thoughts? I sort of agree with Geoff Toovey that spending several hundred million on 2 stadiums that are 10/15 minutes up the road from each other is a bit silly. This will really, really hurt the Sharks, Sea Eagles and Dragons IMO. Penrith playing the odd game at Parra shouldn't hurt them too much cos it's just a 25 minute express train straight there.
That's the shit thing. Wollongong gets fucking robbed with 4 home games a year. The NRL could very well put pressure on those other clubs to move more games to Allianz which I think is shit.
It's getting harder to travel around/between Sydney suburbs; not easier. Centralising all the action in Sydney to a few venues makes no sense to me at all.
I just hate the AFL model. There's nothing wrong with 20k capacity Suburban stadiums for home and away matches.
And yeah, this. There's constant talk about how there are too many Sydney clubs, so how about not trying to turn a semi-regional team into another Sydney club? I don't see any reason for St George to exist at all if they're not going to play most of their games in Wollongong; the other 1000 clubs in southern Sydney have it covered.
The AFL model works in the AFL because attendences are a lot higher there. Even then you've got a clamering to return to surburban/boutique stadiums because clubs lose too much money in less attractive fixtures. I can't see the centralised model working in the NRL, especially given there has been more sprawl in where the clubs are based than in the AFL.
I'm pretty sure the number of games the NRL has committed too has been overstated here... 100 games between the 3 codes every year was the commitment. Including finals, origin, the 4 clubs who call the stadiums home and the gypsies like Wests who use it for the odd game we're already committed to roughly 60 games a year. Throw in Sydney FC, WSW and the Warratahs, ARU and Football Australia and the 100 games is nothing.
No from the three codes combined. Manly got 10m today from the state govt on top of the 10 (soon to be 15m the federal government gave them) to build a new grandstand. Their future at Brookie looks as good as its ever been.
Out of it all I'm most excited about the SOO matches @ the SFS whilst ANZ is out of action for a few years.
Got to say the plans for ANZ look fucking awesome too. Will be the best rectangular stadium in Australia.
It's not the Sydney comp, because it couldn't survive without the other teams. I still think the GF should remain in Sydney, same as the AFL remaining in Melboune. It's tradition, keep it.
I will be all for Suncorp hosting the GF for those 4 years if it means they increase the capacity of Suncorp up to 70-80k
