Heads up is almost certainly the best measure of a player's ability, due to the fact that you will generally be seeing a flop 60-80% of the time as opposed to the 10-20% you will see during full ring giving you the chance to make far, far more decisions over a far shorter time period. Not sure what else you propose is a better judge of a good player, especially considering nearly all of the top 20 winners of 2012 played HUSNGs.
