What sim would you prefer?

  1. The current sim (for an example, see a match thread

    19.2%
  2. The proposed new sim (pictures and explanation in OP)

    Hello loyal aflsimmerz.

Every week I grow more and more discontent with our current simulator. It does not allow the teams any tactical control, nor are players differentiated enough at all; virtually every back and forward pocket are shit, every centre half forward underperforms and every game is won in the midfield/full forward. I'm able to implement post counts but not near the extent I wish to.

I don't feel our current simulator is up to scratch with both a realistic AFL simulation or keeping the simulation similar to the other sims.

The reason I went for the current simulator is
    - Every other AFL sim league used it
    - It provided potential to have inter forum games
    - It provided a live commentary
    - It recorded stats
    - I was unable to work with an alternative.

    However, an alternative has emerged.

This alternative is not a purpose built simulator. With some time, I and hopefully some other/s who help out will be able to make it functional as our AFL simulator, provided the member base is keen.

This simulator provides a distinct and noticeably more realistic simulation. As well as the match engine itself resembling more of an afl game, it gives me more control over.... everything.

    - Home ground advantage would be available and relevant
    - Statistics outputs would be more relevant to performance
    - Efficacy stats (Bulls to :fap: )
    - Each player has 25 'sub abilities' that would make up their player. These can be easily edited to have whatever effect I choose regarding activity.
    - Going on from the above, with these abilities I can set 3 or 4 templates for each position, so one's base stats could be manipulated. Instead of generic fullbacks, we could have: Offensive fullbacks, Rebounding fullbacks, Lockdown fullbacks and Organising fullbacks for example. Each role would have a distinctly different effect on the team, strategy and matches.
    - Height and weight would be relevant.

    However, with it come drawbacks

    - Live commentary would cease to exist as we know it. I'd have to do *live* matches like it's done in bballsim.
    - Stats collection is impossible. I would screenshot the stats output but it does not save anywhere, nor is it copyable (some msflexgrid or something). If people wanted seasonal stats recorded, I'd need a volunteer or two to 'transcribe' the statistical output. I'm sure we could work out an excel sheet or something which collated all the stats once they were typed but they'd have to be typed out manually. Unlike Mousey in bballsim - this is something I have no interest in doing so screenshots will do, and if people want long term stats collation they'd have to volunteer to help out

I feel the positives outweigh the negatives.

Here are some example output from a real life AFL match I have just simmed. (Excuse essendon bombers being the 'abombers' - I'm editing afl teams into the database and it's much easier to have the team I'm currently on first in the alphabetical order so I'd temporarily edited their name)

I've said my piece. At the end of the day I'll try and do what people want. No guarantees. I intend to keep AFLsim running for the forseeable future and although there are obvious drawbacks, I think this will be a good move for the future and enjoyment of the sim. It's a much more user friendly, involved sort of simulation and not kind of a step removed like the wall of text used to be.

That said, I'm posting this thread not to announce a new sim, but to open the floor up for opinions. I could be wrong... you could disagree that this is a good idea... you could be attached to the commentary and stats collection of the old sim: all are valid opinions, hence why I'm seeking them.

And yeah I'd like as much feedback as possible, even if it's not directly relevant i.e: if you'd like to keep the current simulator is there anything I could do to improve it or questions about the proposed new one etc.

The more votes in the poll, the easier life is for me so if you've got even a slight interest in the sim and feel slightly inclined some way or the other I'd love you for voting :)

The new sim looks excellent, from an outsider.

But lack of long-term stats, for me, is a clincher.

Like the look of this sim, but I also enjoy the commentary and stats that come out of the current sim.

And before someone points it out I'm completely aware that the way I phrase the OP will probably lead to response bias so if you can ignore my opinion.

How come that sim looks like Footy Fanatic?

  7. Arheiner SIA Yates

I never really read the commentary/watch the games so definitely the second option.

  8. morgieb MC Burridge

The second one seems better but the lack of statistical output is an annoyance.

  9. Gazza GJ Weaver

Swear I've seen that somewhere, have we tried using it in the past?

There is statistical output, but no opportunity for collation of long term stats, trends etc.

Personally, I think there's something inherently skewed about the existing sim which makes certain types of players appear to be useless. Hence, IF this new sim is more balanced and ensures that players can be successful in any field position then I think the benefits outweigh the loss of long-term statistical trends.

Basically, I can see the current AFL Sim becoming exceedingly dull if you can be a success just through your guy playing in the 'right' position to be a success.

Hence, I cautiously vote for the new sim.

However, I don't like the Sim Owner having the ability to edit individual player stats depending on their subjective view on activity. I'd like to see something more objective and robust around how stats would be adjusted for activity so that we know that there's less opportunity for human error when making adjustments.

Sounds like the registrations would have to be redone, but would have more Seasonal Rugby style flexibility in the type of player you'd sign up as. That can only be a good thing.

I believe Eggman used to use it. I doubt it'd have been effective as it's such a delicate sim. I've spent probably 30 hours just balancing things to make sure it's how it should be or else it's lopsided completely.

  12. Gazza GJ Weaver

Yeah, might of been right at the start

  13. Tartmaster AJ James

I don't think the loss of commentary is a big deal, I know I for one can never be fucked reading the wall of text, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

The stats thing is a big deal though, unless we had a few reliable blokes doing the stats upkeep, that could be a deal breaker.

Yeah, and I've begun to agree. You're not effected by this as such as you play like fullbacks traditionally do, however under the new sim someone like you or morgieb in a forward pocket would have the potential to be statistically best on, not just via virtue of exceeding for your role.

There's such fluidity in the current sim that you can plan anyone, anywhere and receive a minimal penalty, through something outside my doing. This plans to rectify it. It aims to give all 22 players on the field a role, not just 6-7.

    I agree

We have had a post rank page up and running all season to which I've developed an objective system of manually entering in post ranks. 50% of the ability I am able to change on a player comes from my 'perceived' past performance of that person last season, these ratings were done at the start of the season. The other 50% comes from week to week posting. I copy the ranks page after every game, then do 'that week's ranks' based on posts in that week (simple subtraction :) ) and they're entered into the sim. Currently, it doesn't have enough of an effect for my liking, but the effect it does have is pretty objective (for the record, I've been god awful this season)

The prospective new sim's database is in access - it's where absolutely everything is. There's potential for an automated ability program but that's just in the works now and far from definite.

I hope that addresses the above. If I've misunderstood you, feel free to let me know.

Yep, most likely. Which to me is one of the best things about it. You're currently like a Simon Prestigiacomo when you wanted to be a Nathan Bock. Under the new system you could be a rebounding centre half back, where you'd play in defence on the big forwards and get 20 touches a game slicing open on the rebound.

to be fair currently I only post goals at the end of each round and update the stats every 5-6 weeks. It's not like they've received any interest when I've psoted them :p

If somehow a way is found to be able to 'rip' the data off the ms flex grid output then perhaps there's a way but that's a minimal chance at the moment.

  16. MightyPies DA Alessi

Skip. Ie used FFX on many occasions and I'm pretty sure there is long term stats. Will there be no record because you're changing the database or?

  17. Skippos SM Morgan

I'd only be able to keep long term stats if I did it in season mode. That requires 16 teams and I only control one. I'd need control of both teams for a match and the ability to only have 4-5 teams in a league which fffx doesn't offer.

  18. Skippos SM Morgan

For the record if the new sim does go forward a decision will need to be made before the end of the season as preparations will take time and I don't want a lengthy (5 months like last time) offseason

Seems the goods, and it's not as if the stats won't be there at all so they can be collated anytime. Shame about the text commentary though, I usually just scroll through and look for my name and read those bits.

It seems the output is much more detailed than the current sim and can still give you a fairly good overview of the game and idea of what went down IMO.

  20. Mousey AJ Son

FFFX is a much better program, as long as you iron out it's little kinks. While the previous sim had a tendency to favour full forwards, full backs seem to have too much of the ball in this sim I've found.

Iron that out and I'm happy to covert I reckon.
