FORM LINE

St Kilda is one of two unbeaten teams of the competition and we couldn’t have a much bigger challenge this weekend than what we will face at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Saints haven’t just been sneaking over the line but have really dominating their opposition by scoring goals and keeping the opposition’s goals to a minimum. In both of these areas, St Kilda has been superb. The Saints showed in their game against Collingwood on Monday that they have a good balance in their line-up, very mature bodies and are a tough team to beat.

Essendon looked more consistent over four quarters against Hawthorn last week which was pleasing to see. In our wins against Carlton and Collingwood, we had patches where we weren’t as intense as we could have been but last week we were able to keep going at the same speed as we started at until late in the game. We will need to replicate that form this week if we are going to match the in-form St Kilda.

INS & OUTS

For the first time in a long time we are most likely going to go in with an unchanged line-up. It is a fantastic thing for the group that played against Hawthorn.

Obviously it means the guys who are out at the moment like Brent Prismall, Michael Hurley and Scott Lucas have to play well with Bendigo and stake their claim. We’ll be watching Bendigo really closely this week because it is just as important as the senior team from a development perspective and we need to look to keep improving our younger players so we have plenty of options for our senior side.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Stephen Milne is in the most consistent form of his career so he will be really important to negate this week. I also think St Kilda’s ruckmen Michael Gardiner and Stephen King - who didn’t play last week – have been towers of strength all year. I think their value has been underestimated across the league.

It’s been really pleasing to see Jason Winderlich to come back and play at the level he has after that very serious back operation. He’s been a credit to himself. I thought Henry Slattery played a fantastic game last week in defence. Not only did he stop his man, he gave us plenty of drive and rebound and I thought he was certainly one of our better players on the night.

The way that Jay Neagle and Matthew Lloyd worked together last week was a credit to Lloydy. For Matthew to take 15 marks was a pretty big effort for someone who has played a lot of footy I thought his game was right up there as one of the better ones I’ve seen.

Angus Monfries always asks for the tough roles and he likes the tough roles. He’s turned himself into a very team orientated Essendon player. He manages to get disposals and kicks some goals but he does a lot of team things in chasing and tackling. His communication in the forward line is sensational and that’s what we want our emerging leaders to do and I think Angus is a big plus for us in the forward line when he does that for us. His role on Hodge last week was integral to the team winning. His role this week may be a bit different but you know he is just as important.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears will probably be thrown another big challenge this week against Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschkitzke. We’ve got Adam McPhee down there as well who has been playing some solid football and amongst the three of them they’ll get to look at those two big players. Both are in pretty good form. Riewoldt is moving the best I have seen him for the past twelve months. He looks injury free with that knee and he’s running really well and we’re going to have to combat that.

I’ll just urge Cale and Tayte to keep playing the percentages and playing the basics and just be as aggressive as they were last week.

AFL is an amazing game; you can have your highs and your lows and you’ve just got to come with the same attitude each week to play hard and try and beat your direct opponent. I’m looking for that this week.

I am pleased with Tayte and Cale (considering their age), because Tayte last year had some injury concerns and we drafted him as a 17 year old and he’s really in his first year this year from a youth point of view. And Cale before he came into our club had only played Colts in Western Australia and a little bit of reserves footy, so he hadn’t really played against men. His first taste of that was with the Bendigo Bombers. Cale’s form in Bendigo before he got picked was very, very good. I think that is another lesson for us. Good form in the VFL should be rewarded, and he’s taken that good form in the AFL which has been pleasing.

Roughhead and Franklin proved last year that they are two of the best forwards of the competition in the one team, so that is hard to combat. When you’ve got Mark Williams and Cyril Rioli in the forward line too, it’s hard to come up and help out. But we managed to do that last week which is a credit to all of our defenders. To think that Cale Hooker, Tayte Pears, David Myers and Courtney Dempsey would be all playing in the same defence, being so youthful, is exciting. I guess we’re endeavoring to do that as a club, to give young men opportunities to play next to each other, to learn each other’s games and thankfully we’re getting the opportunity to put game time into them, and significant game time.

I dont think mcphee has the speed to stay on reiwoldt, and he is to important moving the ball up the field, i think pears to go on reiwoldt IMO, hoping for at least a good close game, i think we can definately push the saints if we play up to scratch

i think essendon have the sort of game that we can break the saints open and they have been winning based on being misely, if we play well i think we are a chance (not a big one, but one none the less)
