Brisbane Broncos thread on how to lose a GI and a Lock and a semi final

Granted options were limited by the time Bennett got in but Blake Austin would've been a pretty good place to start.

I know no one would ever say it publicly but I reckon it's pretty obvious 2016 is the year the Broncos have their eye on so even just a fringe first grader like Isaac John with the intention of using the salary cap space they've just freed up for 2016 on one of the good halves who are coming off contract next year would've been a better option IMO.

Boyd is clearly seen as a long term solution though.

Banking on Ash Taylor or Jayden Nikorima from the U20s IMO.

A part of me simply wanted em to play Barba at 6 and Milford at 1 next year then use paper bags/scratchies to lure DCE for the following season.

In saying that though, we can make it work with Hunt, Boyd and Milford.

Hodges will need to be getting more involved as a 2nd receiver on the right, since Boyd can't seem to do anything when he isn't on the left...and even then, he's been pretty predictable lately. He's probably going to be better than Barba was this year, but he can't be a long term option at fullback. Hopefully somebody forces him to the wing eventually, where he's actually damn good.

I keep seeing that Brisbane are gonna spend big on a half in 2016...Do we really need to? We have Milford/Hunt. Both young, with lots of potential. The only way it would work is moving Milford to fullback and Boyd to Centre/Wing.

They might even throw a mint at Folau in preparation for Hodges inevitable retirement.

I'd agree with that signing. Would be a good replacement.

Gagai is pretty much all but confirmed as Hodges long term replacement

Well we'll certainly have the worst defensive centre in the match spot covered...

Such short memories in here when it comes to Boyd tbh.

Though he favours the left (like just about every player); Boyd is fine on both sides imo. The way Hodges goes about things, he wouldn't want his playmakers overdoing it anyway.

Boyd also throws the best-concealed forward pass in the league tbh. Some of the balls he gets away with is criminal.

This is actually an example of stubborness, rather than any short-term memory. Alec doesn't like liking good players, so he's always hated Boyd.

    So with Blair signed....

    1. Boyd
    2. Vidot
    3. Reed
    4. Hodges
    5. Copley
    6. Milford
    7. Hunt
    8. McGuire
    9. McCollough
    10. Blair
    11. Glenn
    12. Thaiday
    13. Parker

    14. Oates
    15. Gillett
    16. Gavet
    17. Garbutt

  13. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

The only ones in the starting lineup without international experience are Copley and Macca.

Gotta say, I hope signing nuffies like Blair or Boyd (as a fullback) isn't just some bizzare way of Bennett getting back at the Broncos.

  15. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Boyd isn't a nuffie at the back. With his head right he will do a good job.

Boyd is definitely better than the two fullbacks you had this season. In an ideal world you'd have signed a half instead and played Milford at the back, but there aren't any on the market that would make that a better option than what you've done IMO. I think the role of Parker is going to be really important in how Milford operates -- excellent offloader obviously, but even beyond that I think Parker has it in him to play before the line a bit more and push Milford a bit wider on some plays, like Paulo does for Parramatta, Hinchcliffe does for Melbourne, Harrison did for the Titans and the whole Dogs middle third does.

  17. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Agreed, but being better than Barba/Hoffman isn't a great thing. I'd be happy for Hodges to play fullback in attack and move Boyd to right centre. I think Milford will benefit more from other people offloading instead of Parker. When Parker has it, the defence always is ready for the offload, you hear them screaming 'offload' as soon as he gets the ball. Gillett could be the best person for Milford to follow, as he has the ball skills, and an OK offload.

  18. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah that's a good point. I also think it plays into what I said about Parker playing before the line.. if they're set to wrap all the ball to prevent the offload then that sucks in a lot of defenders, so passing before the line out the back to Milford could give him a lot of room to move.

  19. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

If he does that more, it will offer a lot more opportunities. Even if he can get Milford and Godges into a 1v1, then we will actually be dangerous.

Blair will be very handy come origin time
