There's about 70% chance of me heading over to South America and going to some games next year. Are NZ looking like qualifying again?
The winners of the OFC qualifying zone play 4th placed CONCACAF and the winners of the Asian 5th place playoffs play the 5th placed South American team this time, which is looking like Mexico, Panama or Honduras.
Honduras is doable. U can always cheese a goal on a corner in their stadium and bus the rest of the time.
Australia moved to Asia because of the farcical qualification rules. Also agree witb Lukic. FIFA pandering to Africa and Asia for votes dilutes the standard.
Well the World Cup can't really be about achieving the highest possible standard because it's always going to be well below the standard of the best clubs. I like how it contrasts a lot of different footballing styles and cultures against each other. You don't get that so much at club level because teams can just import players to cover the weaknesses of their home country. I definitely think a 5th African team brings more to the tournament in that sense than a 14th European team.
No longer can Europe lay a justifiable claim to having 13 of 32 spots when Asia has only four automatic qualifiers. Let’s look at the past two World Cups as a case in point. In 2006, not one of the five UEFA ‘indirect’ qualifiers, including the group runners-up, progressed from beyond the second round while in 2010 things were even worse. The four sub-qualifiers - Greece, Slovenia, France and Portugal – between them won only three matches at the tournament and all bar Portugal were bundled out in the first phase. A quick glance at the list of potential qualifiers for Brazil includes the likes of Bulgaria, Hungary and Albania – hardly nations that would strike fear into any of the leading AFC contenders. Just as the world is no longer a colonial plaything for the European powers neither should its biggest sporting event feature such a bloated number of UEFA contenders. The region already has nine automatic qualifiers. The time has come to stop the ‘second chance’ for those that can’t top their group. Take those four slots and redistribute them to the other regions. If you’re not good enough to top the group then tough luck. Think that’s unfair? Just take a look at the list of African nations likely to miss out on a place in Brazil under a similar structure in CAF.
Yeah exactly. It's an absolutely farce that Australia play in Asia while there's an Oceania group and their decision to do so just points out how much of a disadvantage playing in that group is.
What GF and Cribb said. If Oceania had an automatic qualifying place we wouldn't be in Asia I don't think.
We've played Honduras a couple of times, 1 win and a draw we should have won (Smeltz missed a pen late). Just praying Mexico get up there.
Meh reckon the Kiwis can beat Honduras. And surely Mexico would get immediate qualification? Aren't they like the best North American soccer team?
