I remember the bands I consciously watched at festivals. And lots of bands play shit sets on various tours as well. Do they not count?

Don't get upset because your one of those faggots that go to festival's. You'll realise one day the joys of seeing bands properly.

  8. PaulFromOz PF Oz

    They don't.

    Proper gigs>>>>>>>>>>festivals

But that doesn't mean you haven't seen bands if you see them at festivals.

IMO festivals count as long as you saw their entire set. You can't say you've seen a band when you've stopped to watch them for 5 minutes as you were walking between stages.

    Truths.

Seen tons of bands properly, only been to one festival in recent years, that was for one day only and to see one band specifically. The set they played was the same as the arena show I saw them at two months later. So the fact that you think one should count and the other shouldn't shows your a dense cunt who is trying and failing to be elitist.

Reckon I've seen probably 3 acts sideshow as well as them at a festival on the same tour and have played the same set list on every occasion and the atmosphere has been better at the festival every time.

Yeah, They count, But I'm just saying they hardly count for anything, when someone put's up a list of 100+ bands that have just featured at 3 festivals they've been too.

  17. GIMH GIMH Martyn

    Top of the pops? Lol.

    Well-built argument by you.

The post after is fair enough though and FTR bands' own gigs are generally better.

Oh aye, seeing a band on their own in the dingy Academy 3 is better than a half empty showing at midday on the last day of a festival, when most people just want to sleep.

Fact is festivals are a way to discover new bands and expand your musical tastes. Saying 'seeing them at a festival doesn't count' is bollocks, sometimes it counts for all, as they can open you up to a whole new band, who you go to listen to/buy albums of/see live so many times after.
Some on my list I first encountered at festivals (Hot Hot Heat, 80s Matchbox, Sons and Daughters spring to mind), and some of them were barely known when I saw them (Hard-Fi were completely random at the time, actually saw them opening for Green Day, thought them a bit shit, but then 2 months later and they are everywhere, and still a bit shit)
I've actually missed off many a band I've seen at a festival (and others at their own gigs) who I didn't enjoy and never really listened to afterwards.

Certainly some bands do use the same sets for own gigs and festivals - others change it. There seems to be no general consensus how though. I've seen bands tour albums, but play the back catelogue at the festival (Dropkick Murphy's, Flogging Molly, NoFX spring to mind), others do it the other way round (RHCP).

As for festivals not counting because A) you only see them for 5 mins passing or B) your too wasted to remember..... Some of us actually went to festivals not to get smashed, but to enjoy the music, and spent the days watching bands constantly (then getting smashed in the evening!) - Do remember Electric Six playing 'Danger High Voltage' first in their set, introducing it with 'You've only come for this song, here it is, now fuck off and let us play our set' - sadly most did go after that...

Funnily enough, Red Hot Chili Peppers push the title for both best and worst gigs I've seen. Saw them at the Council House in 04 (I think), with James Brown supporting. Was completely insane gig from both of them, never got as carried away as the Chili's set before. Saw them at Leeds a few years later, and it was the most half arsed performance I've ever heard, everyone was so dissapointed, and Kiedis kept on having hissy fits and storming off for now reason. All they did was play Stadium Arcadium, and its an awful album.
