Expansion?

    seems to have been put on the back burner, I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

    My opinion for a long time was that we simply don't have the player pool. But if the game could maintain the cap with an extra team or two im not so sure. The ESL wouldn't really compete so we wouldn't have as many there, and more imports may happen etc.

    Having thought about it for a while there would need to be some sort of draft or something though for mine to try and share the playmakers across the teams. Cronulla, Canberra and a few others were absolutely disgraceful at times this year as well, so maybe we don't have the depth.

    Would you entertain the thought or dismiss it?

    On the one hand, there seem to be significant inequalities in where clubs are based, and I don't really like folding clubs unnecessarily. On the other hand, I just don't know how much the player pool can expand by. We could get a few guys back from England, but there'd be a shit load more spuds in the NRL.

    We could maybe afford 2 more clubs I think.

    I'm in favour of it. There's more depth (or at least potential depth) than we really give the game credit for IMO. There's little depth in the clubs we have but that's because of the way the salary cap works with 25 man squads (FWIW I'd start increasing this squad limit as the salary cap got bigger; we should be paying more players rather than playing the top players more).

    So many talented players just give up a career in rugby league or head tot he UK because there aren't the places for them here. Give more young men an opportunity to become professional rugby league players with bigger squads and more teams, and we'll see greater depth in the game.

    Yeah this is pretty much what has changed my mind a bit. Trawled through some squad lists from lower grades and European rugby etc. So many fellas still playing most cunts have completely forgotten about.

    Bring back reserve grade in the NRL and these lost players would have somewhere to play.

    Regarding expansion. I definitely think another QLD based club should be looked at. The Brisbane outer regions would definitely support another alternative. IMO

    Has league completely given up on SA & WA?

    I guess it's the age old "heartlands versus new territory" debate.

    With the Broncos (London version thereof) being relegated this season, the only non-Lancs/Yorks team in the SL is Catalans, who're from France's league centre of interest anyway, such as it is, so it looks like the heartlands have won out up here.

    WA is still a remote possibility, plenty of RL fans out west. Forget SA, its purely AFL down there.

    The Central Coast Bears idea seems to have finally died a slow death. I agree a second Brisbane team would work.

    Definitely need a second side in Brisbane. With the Sydney area having 9 sides surely Brsibane can accommodate another.

    Totally agree with this. Think expansion would see the value of older players rise as well as they'd get an extra year or two in the NRL.


    It'd be great to have a proper reserve grade competition and the 20s changes to under 21s too.

    Im for it, if it brings a new audience to the game. So that chucks out a second brisbane team for me as most of them will already be watching or going to games etc.

    If there is enough interest for perth, id be happy with them getting a team. I think.player wise we would be ok, as others have said we lose blokes who have potential or havd already become proven fg pkahers, to esl and union etc. This would likely give some of them places to go in the nrl as the pool is spread that bit more. Over the years perth might start to add some decent juniors to the pool as well.

    Yeah Peth needs to be one, but there does need to be another Brisbane team for mine. Maybe an Ipswich team.

    I do too but I don't think relocation is an option and the comp are going to find it extremely difficult to rid themselves of any of the current clubs.

    Cronulla always appear to be hanging on by a thread but they do have a pretty big 'home' area and actually play at home.
