My biggest question marks over this season are actually over some of the rebuilding steps that have been taken. Buderus coming back and now playing practically 80 minutes has been probably the thing that worries me most. Thanks to Hilder\'s concussion problems and Bennett\'s odd thought that Costigan can still service out of dummy half if need be, we haven\'t really plugged that hole beyond next season, when I expect Buderus to retire. Cuthbertson is yet to convince me he\'s anything other than a player you can carry when you\'re already winning, and the only thing that covered up the lack of go-forward he and Snowden (who has been solid, but can\'t really lead the pack) is the injection of another 30+ player in Mason. I probably would\'ve placed us low in the eight this season, but if you told me we\'d lose Gidley I\'d have said that we would be lucky to make it. With the run home we have I\'d be surprised if we moved up the table at all from here.I\'m happiest though with the direction our recruitment is a going in, Tinkler claimed he\'d be bringing back and promoting local talent, which he did with the likes of Tahu, Buderus, Rochow, Snowden, McKinnon and Mason who all have ties to the local area.

Didn't realise how old their side is until that post.

I think it is mostly rebuilding. So many new names in the side (Snowden, Boyd, Bedsey, Tahu, Mason) along with the overall strategy Bennett coaches I think anything above 6th would be overachieving. Injuries haven't helped either, with Gids missing for most of the season and various players missing weeks at a time.

With Mullen, he does get a lot of shit for now being able to consistantly put in good games. But he never really has any solidarity around him, for many years the forward pack was poor. There was so many different partners with him (Walsh, Dureau, Rodgers, Gidley, iirc Hilder spent time there), so the pressure of leading the attack is on him. When he is a much better second receiver.

But I so hope they win this Saturday. I hate having to deal with all the Warrior fuckwits here every time they beat the Knights.

The boys should start planning their trip to Hawaii or whatevs if they haven't already.

I see them finishing 9th but if some how they beat the warriors 8th.

Just watching the replay now. lol at Uate's put down. It should've been awarded afaic but still, that cunt needs shooting. I'd pick Tate on the wing for Australia before Uate for sure. Much more reliable.

Glad to see the Knights win though. Mate had 10K on them 34.5 start @ $1.09. Must've been fucking nervous at 18-0.

 he would've been shitting bricks with that start.

One more tough game against the Raiders who are hot and cold atm but I see Knights losing by 4 I hope not but shit happens.

Looks like Mase is gonna stick around for another 2 years.

I was pretty impressed by Korbin Sims today from what I saw of the 20's game (about 60 minutes). I reckon Bennett will turn him into a top prop over the next few years.

How long is McAnus out for? Naiqama has been pretty deadly lately.

I generally hate teams that play like shit for most of the season and then come home with a wet sail, sneaking into the 8. They often end up doing more damage than they should once they get there. I give the Knights a bit of a pass though as I like their club and players. Their performance against the Dogs next week will be very, very interesting to watch.

    Haha yeah AWTA.

Plus, I think this is more a case of it taking a while for the new structure of the side and the new coach etc to gel properly, rather than the usual cases of a pretty ordinary side suddenly running into a decent patch and form and then getting on a role. Form is cyclical but improvement can be linear and the latter is what we've seen from Newcastle this year IMO.

Well never fear guys since this team wont make the 8.

I've never understood this, this season is 26 rounds long, wins in the last 5 games are just as important as wins in the first 5.

I've got no qualms when it happens and I think it's a bit wrong of you two to cover up hate for teams that have done it before under the premiss that 'you hate the late run' as you've both just said you don't care no that Newcastle are doing it.

For me it depends on why I think it's happening. Not the club as such, but the structural reasons for the late run. If it's based on a slow progression into a good structure then it's fine, but if it's just based on two decent players going Super Saiyan and building momentum for a bunch of absolute shunts who play well for 6 weeks and then inevitably return to being shit for their rest of their careers, then I do think it's a bit dire.

You get sides who just scrape into the eight based on a late surge then have the form and momentum going into the finals that a better side wouldn't have. With Newcastle I don't think it's form - which is cyclical - I think it's improvement.

Well that's fair enough in it's own way. I can see how it comes across as more 'worthy' than a Raiders/Tigers/Parra 'everyone offload every opportunity, if it hits the ground we die'
