Yeah because NRL players are the epitome of professionalism

Ugh. Where was all this talk when SKD was shuffled on? They're professional footballers for god's sake. They're more than welcome to feel aggrieved if Pearce goes but then they get on the training paddock and work. You're talking about developing a "toxic" culture. When does that ever happen at a successful club winning games? I don't care how long Pearce has been a Rooster the idea that Robinson would lose the confidence of the players by replacing him with one of the best and most thorough halves in the last 20 years, is frankly absurd.

SKD was off contract and leaving regardless. I'm not saying it'll happen, I'm saying it's a concern I have with this so there's nothing for you to dispute here. Robbo was on the verge of being let go because he was starting to lose the players in 2016. I can tell you that as a fact. Your point is based on the assumption that we will still have a successful season. Well I don't really care what you think, I think it's possible ala 2016 that we won't have a good season IF the players resent Robbo for it.

I'm with GYR, playing groups can become best mates, I'm sure there would've been talk after this year's prelim loss about building sonethong special etc. To shit on a pretty successful stalwart could easily upset the apple cart.

Toolman definitely right re Keary too.

Wasn't he starting to lose the players precisely because they were having a bad season and as you said at the time, he wasn't changing anything despite all the losses?

I think the Roosters are really pushing the limits here, on two fronts.

Firstly, they're really pushing the limit on exactly how fucking soulless their fans can be. If you have the third best club halfback in the comp, who's 28 and played at the club for ten years as a one club-player, won a premiership and multiple minor premierships ... and you shaft him for a half who is admittedly marginally better but is 33 and was contemplating retirement, that's fucking cold as ice. They've really doubled down on their identity as the short-termist club looking to buy whoever might improve their roster on paper by fucking 2%. I think fans who might like to think the club is about more than that might be fucking pissed off with that sort of shit. They've always been more like that any other club, but they've basically gone #FullAI on this front.

Secondly, their really pushing the boundaries in terms of people thinking the salary cap actually fucking works. If you've got a halfback earning $800,000 per year playing off the fucking bench, then there should be some serious problems with the rest of your squad. You shouldn't be able to sign three marquee halves without having massive holes in your roster if the cap works as designed. I've always dismissed the "lol Roosters are over the cap" talk as conspiracy theories from armchair accountants who support rival clubs, but nah fuck it. If the salary cap works the Roosters should have a fucking shit squad having over-invested in halves. If both Keary and Pearce stay and they make the top eight anyway (which they will, for certain), then it's time to just abolish the fucking cap altogether. At least everything would be fair and above board then.

I've known the Roosters were shunts forever and rightly despised them, but this really is something else.

Fans have to.hold clubs accountable for this sort of shit imo, I never renewed my Penrith membership following them axing Luke Lewis as I just don't think it's what a club should be about.

This is apparently what they pay each player (lol at matterson in centres). Tupou is way too low, Ferguson is apparently low cause of his off field issues, aubusson and liu could easily get more money elsewhere, taukeiaho is way too low

    1 James Tedesco $1,000,000

    2 Blake Ferguson $400,000

    3 Latrell Mitchell $350,000

    4 Ryan Matterson $200,000

    5 Daniel Tupou $220,000

    6 Luke Keary $600,000

    7 Cooper Cronk $1,000,000

    8 Jared Waerea-Hargreaves $650,000

    9 Jake Friend $500,000

    10 Dylan Napa $550,000

    11 Boyd Cordner $750,000

    12 Mitchell Aubusson $280,000

    13 Isaac Liu $200,000

    TOTAL: $6,700,000

    RESERVES

    Mitchell Pearce $800,000

    Michael Gordon $250,000

    Jayden Nikorima $350,000

    Zane Tetevano $120,000

Don't you have to have 30 players under the salary cap? Or does the 2nd tier cap factor some of that in as well?

Yeah I completely agree on your first point. I dismissed the rumours at first as it seemed extremely short sighted to make a decision like that. I didn't really care for what seems like the desperation of winning a comp that sacrifices Pearce and puts the team in an unnecessarily vulnerable state. I will say this though, no one can deny that playing with Cooper Cronk for 2 years will make Mitchell Pearce a much better player both on and off the field. That is really the only point that makes me ok with this decision (if he stays obv)

As for the second point, I honestly never ever respond to people whinging about our salary cap but I will say this. To me, the NRL made a huge mistake in the latest player agreement. If the players want to effectively become shareholders of the game then the NRL should've said yes we will give you what you want but in exchange, your salaries will become public. I struggle to see how in the age of social media etc, the transparency between the NRL, clubs and the fans has not changed at all in the 15 odd years that I've been old enough to remember what's going on.

Yeah I completely agree with all of that. I think it would have been very Roosters for them to just shaft Keary when Cronk came on the market, ignoring a good purchase and a good season in favour of something that was a bit better in the short term.. but shafting Pearce instead is something else.

In terms of the cap thing, I've always thought that going through team squads and arguing that Team X or Team Y has to be over the cap is basically the lowest form of dumb fan shitposting, but there does come a point where it becomes silly, and I think we've kind of reached that point.

I don't think Easts are necessarily over the cap, but if they're not then it's just as big a problem -- that a team can just sign three halves on huge money and not have it ruin the rest of their squad if they're rich in the right way as to get around the cap. The Roosters squad would be mid-range even with mid-range halves, ffs. So I'd favour just getting rid of the cap entirely at this point -- it doesn't do what it's set out to do, and getting rid of it would at least give clubs incentive to be financial successful in any way they could, rather than just the ways that let them stay technically under the cap with third party payments and other such deals.

This is under the assumption that Pearce gets shafted right?

Not if he gets moved to 5/8 like Robbo and Nick have said he will.

  14. Magic AJ Parker

Roosters have front loaded their 2018 cap this year. Politis said we were about 600k under.
Definitley something that should be banned from happening because like you said it's made a mockery of the salary cap.

  15. Julian BJ Taylor

    lol, yeah right.

That cunt would command 600k plus easy elsewhere he's not happli playing for Easts at 1/5th of his worth.

  16. Julian BJ Taylor

    You do now, yes.

So Moylan to Cronulla and Maloney to Penrith. Interesting. Sharks also chasing Pearce.

  18. Magic AJ Parker

Haha yeh, no way Isaac Liu is getting 200k either.

On the contrary there's no way we re-signed Fergo for 400k on a 1yr deal this year.

  19. Magic AJ Parker

I actually think that's a really good swap for both clubs.

Maloney brings a bucket load of experience to the Panthers and will take a lot of pressure off Cleary.

Sharks potentially get the better player and he's only just entering his prime.

Think it's a shocker for Penrith personally. Moylan is incredibly classy, one of the best decision makers in the comp I reckon.
