I suspect you don't need to, but watching the original 3 from the 70s/80s would explain a few references a bit more.
This movie was legit good. An awesome ride from start to finish. The new characters are great and really own the movie. Can we do spoilers here or nah?

Started watching the entire series in prep for this and watched Empire Strikes Back again tonight for the first time in a few decades. Good stuff. Remember being in awe of the Imperial Walkers watching it as a lad. Stands the test of time well.
A bit a syfy feast watched 4,5,6 star wars then watched lord of the rings and to top it off its ok its syfy to say the least first season of dark matter.
So have watched the first 3 good movies and then The Phantom Menace last night. It really is a bit shite. Childish characters and humour. Not even sure if I should bother with the other two.
Episodes 2 and 3 are much better tbh. They still have really poor dialogue but some good stuff too. I like 2 but find 1 near unwatchably boring
