Pretty late to the party, but we don't have a thread for it anyway. Thoughts? The story telling was excellent, although some parts were dissatisfying. Marty's daughter enacting the rape scene for one. Why show that if you're not going to tie that into the plot eventually? And who the hell has 5 Ken dolls lying around?
Yeah I thought the rape scene was pretty significant at the time. '5' was alluded to so much, was almost certain there'd be 5 horseman in the clan etc. but just never happened.
I thought it was kind of funny that they put all this symbology all the way through and then just stuck a middle finger up at the conspiracy theorists
I think ultimately the reality of the community was that the cult had powerful leaders (including potentially Harrelson's character's FIL) and were much more ingrained in the fabric of that society than people had thought. The girl's reenactment scene, along with many other hints being dropped weren't meant to be leading to an ending, but subtly hinting towards the inevitability of more murders to come long after the show's storyline ended.
There was sooooo much to Marty's daughter. It was such a great show. The one thing that really fucking annoyed me was how the creators were up in arms about the conspiracy theories so they gave away the ending (pretty much) at the end of the penultimate episode. They totally didn't think it through and pretty much cut off the nose to spite the face so to speak.
If they were shit performances the show wouldn't have been as good. Best super recent show by a long shot for mine though.
Yeah definitely thought it wasn't the most amazingly written show and more carried on some top notch performances.
Really picked up at the end of episode 4, didn't it? To me the point where the interview ends acts as a natural divider. As long as the interviews were on, there were no blemishes to the show. Once they got out, the story did fail to live up to it's promise.
Isn't that true of every film and tv show ever made? I don't know too many shows that would be better or just as good if the main characters were poorly acted.
Best episode was number 4 IMO. Funniest scene is when they're sitting in the bar and Marty's trying to hash out the problems with his wife and Rust uses some not so subtle ways of letting him know he doesn't give a fuck. The look on his face when Marty takes the ever-present cigarette out of his hand is priceless. The undercover scenes and those preceding them, (knocking off coke from the evidence room, making fake tracks, etc.) are the best in the whole show IMO. McConaughey as Crash, the greasy-haired, slick talking, junked up piece of shit gangbanger is superb. I liked the bloke who played Ginger too. The whole mood was pitch perfect. So many movies/shows fail to produce the seriously edgy feeling (which I've somewhat experienced myself) when you're in the company of genuinely heavy people. The real deal cut-throat. Fucking love the part where he's quizzing them on the plan if the shit hits the fan and they give the typical gunslinger' line, and he's like "So you have thought it out......My bad." ...

Replace the leads with two relative no names who put on good performances but aren't chewing the scenery like the leads actually did, and suddenly True Detective is nowhere near as well received. Some films and shows rely heavily on performance, some less so. The Wire could have had pretty much every actor swapped for someone different and it wouldn't have changed the overall effect of the show. Game of Thrones for 90% of the ensemble is the same.
definitely the case with the bad guys in the wire, not so with the better cops: mcnulty, freeman, bunk, landsman etc etc.
I honestly reckon you could swap out all of those cops for another competent actor and you'd get as good an end product.
Omar is probably the only guy I don't think you could replace, and thats because his wider role was definitely written for him.
Reckon so with kima/prez/Rawls/Colvin/herc/carver/Burrell/Daniels but the ones Julian listed i think would be far worse off. Stringer too IMO
