I mean fuck. It's 30 odd metres, and you can't kick it out on the full. Any decent kicker should be able to do it 19/20 times. An extra 20 metres on your set is such an advantage. I don't think I've seen anyone try it this season. You do that a couple of times, you can darn well guarantee the opposition will think twice about rushing off the line next time around.
Sherwin could kick a steeden. Mind you, Reynolds isn't far off him. Sherwin in his prime had more consistency, but when this guy is on he is on.
Apparently Matt Bowen did one this year but I haven't see it. Most sides actually drop their wingers back the majority of the time believe it or not.
Luke Burt did it against the Titans I think. Were already trailing by heaps with little time left though.
It's something that needs to be done more. Brisbane will never do it, we don't even go for a short kickoff if we are 4 behind with 3mins to play.
When you get the 20m restart it generally means you've just defended a set that's finished in a dangerous position and had you under a bit of pressure, to compound that pressure by looking to get a cheap 20-30m and not finding touch and have the side have a fresh set starting in your half is probably just too great a risk in a lot of minds. I know in lower grades we always had the wingers dropped about 10m for the restarts, the quick restart rule does make it quite a bit more viable though as they wouldn't be back on side and a fast cunt like Bowen/Barba could boot the fucker then power on through and nearly get there first if it didn't find touch.
Yeah, Shifty was a big fan and actually pulled it off quite often, still didn't work all the time though. Pretty devastating to team morale if you fuck it up. Someone expand on the Finch thing?
Back when he played for Canberra, they were 20-20 with the Knights with about 2 minutes to go and had a 20 tap. Finch tried it, kicked it out on the full and gave Johns the shot from right in front to win the game.
