2024 NRL Season

I reckon both the underdogs (Cows & Manly) are where the value are, and I say this as someone who wants Roosters to win (as a fan) and Sharks to (feel bad for Nicho at this point lol).

Sharks competed with Melbourne for a while and are way better than the Cowboys who had all the ball and still almost lost to the shitty Knights. Manly were woeful, their two skinny wingers get dominated at the start of every set so they never go anywhere, Roosters will roll right over them, they'll only lose through self-sabotage which of course is always possible with them but I doubt it.

Roosters managed to dodge Klein this week, so their chances just went up plenty.

This may be the most straight forward finals series to date with the only anomaly being so far that 7th beat 6h (Bulldogs beat Manly) because I can’t see either of the Roosters or Sharks getting up next week, both Penrith & Melbourne look in a different class.

    That would give us

    Week 1 - 1 beat 4, 2 beat 3, 5 beat 8
    Week 2 - 3 beat 7, 4 beat 5
    Week 3 - 1 beat 3, 2 beat 4
    Thus premiers = Melbourne Storm?

Sharks didn't really have the right players to expose Melbourne's often shite defence through the middle but Roosters do in Watson/Tedesco.. having no Brandon Smith probably works in their favour there, Watson's been better than him anyways. But on the converse Munster/Hughes love attacking the edges where Roosters' tiny halves are a big liability. Roosters would have to conjure some epic scrambling defence to win.. which is more possible now that the refs are more reluctant in the finals to blow 6 agains or penalties.

And Sharks are probably better equipped to beat Penrith than the Roosters are. Both Penrith/Sharks like to grind and Sharks love to bomb for the corners where Penrith are weak and luck could favour them. But they'd need a lot of luck, Penrith are obviously a clear step above them.

Asofa-Solomona getting 5 weeks for that tackle is a new low for the NRL. As if the game hasnt been made barely watchable already, this precedent is indefensible even for the most ardent, head trauma advocate. Even the large contingent of Storm haters are off it.

They ruined Game 1 of the Origin. Now they're ruining their own grand final before a ball has even been kicked. No doubt someone will get binned for an equally innocuous tackle. Or the ref will gave far more latitude because of the occasion, as we saw in last year's GF, which makes a mockery of their position in the first place.

And if the tackle warrants such a punishment, why is the VR not under scrutiny, or dropped for allowing NAS back on the field in this match, given what a danger and liability this supension must imply?

Oztag in 10 years...gonna be awesome.

Nelson's a huge loss considering he's one of the few players who can cause Penrith's defence to fall apart.

Very surprised that Storm are the favourites. Penrith are vastly more experienced, superior forward pack combined with Cleary's kicking game, solid defence versus Storm's uncertain defence. Aside from the weather I see nothing in Melbourne's favour.

    Minor Premiership?
    2x H2H wins this year?
    Form player of the comp?
No injury cloud over their star player?

I think Penrith will win, but saying there's nothing in Melbournes favour to be named favourites is a bit much

Penrith are definitely a few ticks below previous years. They're vulnerable to any team that matches their aggression in defence. Both finals ended up comfortable wins but Easts were coming to get them. Cronulla at 10-6 were coming to get them. Crucial errors at the key moment put a halt to both. Im interested to see when Melbourne are rolling if they can maintain that sort of momentum because they'll need to if they wanna win.

I think this is as close to a pre-game 50/50 as any GF we've seen in a long time. So many great match-ups across the park.

I find it hard to imagine the Panthers will have the same level of determination to win as Melbourne after 3 straight but I still favour them slightly.

Penrith definitely know how to step up a gear and their style suits big games so I'm not putting too much account into their regular season games. Obviously the doubt over Cleary is a concern but he seems fully able so long as he doesn't take a wrong hit.

Not really any different to Melbourne's games. The Roosters defence was shocking, as soon as Melbourne got down there they just walked over the tryline. Stiffen that defence up just a bit and the Roosters would've seriously troubled them. Sharks imo competed with Melbourne more equally for a period, the only reason it appears different is simply cause of the way Penrith plays, they grind it down and are happy with a 6 point win. At no point were the Sharks equal to Penrith or could manage anything threatening, they had to rely solely on luck to score which they didn't get.

The way to beat Penrith is how Brisbane almost did it last year, being able to effectively attack from anywhere. Melbourne are quite good at that too, but not as good as Brisbane were, and Brisbane had the pack to match Penrith's. Melbourne don't. Like I said, Nelson's a huge loss, enough for me to pretty much write them off.

Guess we'll see. I'd never write off a side with the talent in Melbourne's spine and Bellamy in the box.
Also think their no-frills pack is much, much more capable than some people realise. NAS adds size and power but the dude is a big liability.

I like the Storm 1-12, Hughes MOTM & Trent Liero > 6 play the balls off the mark.

I think the Panthers have shown more fragility in defence this year than they have in previous years which is why I like the Storm. Think the Storm have similar fragilities in defence but they’ve got more points in them in attack.

Should be a good game regardless, got to be close to the two best sides to compete a Grand Final in the NRL era.

    2000 Broncos Vs Roosters
    2006 Broncos Vs Storm
    2007 Storm* Vs Manly
    2018 Roosters Vs Storm
    2020 Storm Vs Panthers

Klein getting the GF is prank. Be lucky if he doesnt fuck this game in the arse.

  15. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Two big plays from Martin either side of half time. He knows how to get up for big games.

  16. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Thays a huggge error from Edwards. Storm wrre on tilt there. Massive let off

  17. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Storm getting well on top there. Martin again. Jeez he's a competitor.

  18. Magic AJ Parker

Incredible by the Panthers, doubt I’ll ever see another side win 4 in a row in my life time.

Yeo’s running game this year has improved so much. Hard to go past Martin for CCM but Yeo would have to be close.

  19. jazman84 JM Eightyfour

Yeah, Martin was best one ground. Fmd if they give it to Cleary, it will be more egregious than Thurston's make-a-wish Clive he got in 2015.

  20. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Martin, Yeo and Coates were phenomenal. Glad the former got rewarded. Dude plays his heart out.

Hats off to Penrith. Far too good on the night. Brick wall in the mid-field for 50 minutes, then when Melbourne were on top they just moved the brick wall to their goal line. Aside from Coates in the air, the Storm never really looked like scoring again.

The three repeats sets Melbourne had on Penrith's line, Mullet-huysen didnt touch the ball once. That was really telling.
