Well i'm not going to bother going into a specific number but you finished outside the 8 for a good reason. Weak midfield rotation, struggling forward line, lack of a real ruck option. All of which the Cats seem to be addressing with their recruiting but still got some kids who were playing this year who looked like they had a fair bit of development to go.
The additions of Dangerfield and Selwood are massive considering the talent depth of the midfield has greatly reduced as the likes of Bartel, Johnson, Kelly have got older and have played less midfield time.
What are your thoughts on the compensation picks for Selwood & Leuey? Brisbane are up in arms about it, saying that the system is a shambles pretty much. Which it is. Thoughts?
It's pick 39 compo for Luey & 37 or something for Selwood. West Coast cracked it saying he is a valued player rah rah rah, he was the vice captain and couldn't get a game, yet they wan't a good compo pick. Talk of Brisbane matching the offer so Essendon will be forced to trade for him.
RE: compo pick. If the Hawks receive pick 19 or whatever it was for Franklin then no one in the AFL has the right to complain about getting an undervalued pick.
Yeah, it has to be clear what makes a player worth a R1 or R2 pick. It will happen at the end of this period or next, imo.
Gets ignored a bit too much as well that the pick comes in after the clubs draft picks so ladder position does have an impact on the compensation.
That makes sense though. You can't fuck over x clubs because some other club decided not to much an FA offer. To fix it you'd have to make the comp picks for the draft a year later.
So say, for example, Carlton acquires Isaac Smith and the AFL reckon he's worth a first round pick (don't kill be brettman, it's just an example) that means the Hawks compo pick would be like pick 2 or whatever. But if Hawthorn signs, say, Walker and he is deemed a first round pick, Carlton end up with pick 19 or 20. In my opinion both of these players are of roughly the same worth to their respective teams, so how can the AFL employ a system that works like that? Wouldn't that just discourage bottom teams dealing with top teams as they know the pick they will get isn't very high?
Because Melbourne finished the year lower on the ladder than Hawthorn did. So the compo pick goes after that pick. So if Carlton say get a first round compo pick, it becomes the 2nd, but if Hawthorn get the same compo then its after their first pick which would be roughly pick 18. Its not that hard to understand, it makes sense.
