can you take their opinions on the game seriously?

After hanging up the boots because I got Dallas Johnsoned too many times I've recently re-entered the playing arena in the form of Oztag with some mates and fmd some of them are garbage. Makes it hard for me to discuss the game with them because they're absolute pus tactically.

  2. Alec AD Funkotron

Fuck playing Oztag tactically, you play it for fun.

  3. Pretzel P Retzel

Yeah but stuff like knowing when to pass and when to just take a hit-up and settle things down etc. It's frustrating as fuck to be camped in your own end and doing non-stop defensive sets because people are trying to force the pass and create something when it should be about just completing the set and kicking.

  4. Benny BS Read

Yeah I can't handle playing in teams like that

  5. Julian BJ Taylor

    yeah agreed so much.

reminds me of playing for school and the guys who played on the weekend just thinking they were better than everyone else but it was rarely the case.

  6. Jimmy J Read

can't take them seriously, sort of annoying tbh.

  7. Freddy MJ Johns

Dwta, that was the case 90% of the time for mine.

  8. Cribbage RG Cribb

If they're just unco or unfit then it's fine IMO but from what you've said they have retarded match awarness which would make it hard for me to take 'em seriously tbh.

Bask in the glory knowing that you'll pawn them in every thing league related.

You are their OzTag master and therefore they must bow before you !!! [IMG]

Seriously though, a lot of league discussion can be had with knowledge gained from books...watching and studying the game. Some people are good at constructing an argument and like to bombard you with stats and percentages. Others have a memory like a steel trap and can recall matches from 10-15 yrs ago. Others simply write well....

Putting all that info into real/physical interaction on the field is a different story. It's not unusual to find the more academic among us are complete numpties when it comes to doing anything physical.

Doesn't mean that they don't have something to say and can't win and make very good points during a discussion.

The comeback of "oh you've never / can't play the game ....so what would you know" doesn't really stack up for mine in most RL conversations.

    >disclaimer<
I've played the game and was a fantastic player. So don't argue with me cause I know my shit. :sport:

You sounds qualified, you must have been as good as Peter Wallace.

I always thought I had a good mind for rugby league. However, my feet and hands refused to cooperate. That's why I played in the forwards.

Funny......I actually had you in mind when I was writing my comment earlier. :whistling:

Well it's definitely true these days. My final comeback attempt has ended in me dragging my arse around during training and getting beaten from pillar to post by lots of Islanders during preseason. Numpty is quite complementary in my current state.

My Oztag side was like that until I managed to rope them in. We were like the Warriors. Hot potato shit where we could beat the best sides if it came off, but we were very inconsistent.

We'd lose a game 7-6 or even 9-8 etc. I had to explain to them that we can win game by only scoring 1 try if we can shut them out. I used the Bennett era Dragons as an example. Concentrate on shutting a team out and play safe and grind wins.

    These were my game pans:
1 out passing until we reach half way, unless there is something "fo'sho".
Always attract 2 defenders when doing hitups and pull up so you get a quick play the ball.
Play flat early in the set to make it past the advantage line.
Overs running with your winger starting deep infield then shooting to the touch line will net a try more often than not.

Some of the worst opinions I hear about league/NRL are from people who play the game. As much as playing the game gives you a greater respect and appreciation of certain little things, it certainly doesn't mean you automatically have a better understanding about what's going on in the NRL/the tactics of the game.

I'd almost say it has the opposite effect in some cases as many people who have played/coached lower levels or different eras of the game aren't able to grasp the concept that the game they are/were involved in is entirely different to that of current professional level rugby league.

I've almost had to leave the pub when watching NRL games with an old coach of mine who had a brilliant understanding of park footy and had played reserve grade for the Bulldogs in the 80's. He comes out with some of the most ridiculous calls and opinions of players I've ever heard.

Haha yeah spot on. The bloke who coached my dad's NSW Under 16s side or whatever still talks about inside and outside centres when he watches NRL games.

He is a weird unit though. He is about 70 years old and his wife calls him "Coach Baby".

It's something I came to realise a couple of years ago from when I last played and was sitting talking to former Canterbury player Phil Young and whinging about our coach. He agreed with most of my concerns and thought he was making some key mistakes in x and y. I said to him something along the lines of 'with all your experience and the fact both your boys play, why don't you coach us?'

To which he said something along the lines of 'Even at this level the game is to far gone from what I used to play and what I know now. The game it's self is different and what you need to do as coach is different. I honestly reckon you guys would play better if you had no coach, worked out your own moves and defence and had one of the maniacs come into the shed and tell you what the club meant to them, you'd all be so fired up you'd run through brick walls.'

Was an interesting take on it, thought he would've thought he'd be ideal for it as he knew footy, but the footy he knew was totally different and he was the first to admit it.

Or perhaps he just couldn't be fucked and just thought he'd fuck with me, who knows.
