    Oh, for sure.

But he's been involved in the making of a pretty sick song so it's not like he's hopeless.

I thought 1998 and Talk is Cheap were reasonable songs tbph.

Also, I really hated Cosby Sweater the first time I heard it but its grown

I'm not saying he's shit (I probably would call him shit but it's all preference) I just think he's really mediocre. His songs are fine but I'm just confused over him being so, so popular. His songs are just so meh.

Agree with your lack of understanding for Chet Faker lovr, but Get Lucky was merely decent. It was good, but just solid. Nothing on Lorde and Vance Joy who produced something somewhat unique. I don't even like Royals that much, but I do like Lorde's other stuff. These lists continue to deteriorate in overall quality though.

Not many pundits I've discussed this with hold that view.

How are Vance Joy and Lorde unique exactly? Serious question. Without batting an eyelid I'd post these two artists/songs that preceded them and ask what the major difference is?

I did say somewhat. Clearly they're not genuinely unique, but they're not exactly what you'd call the norm. Get Lucky was a good tune from a genre that's fairly populated. From the perspective of someone who's not a dedicated triple j listener, but tunes in when my radio will actually pick up a signal, it felt like Vance Joy and Lorde had made music that stood above similar tracks in the genre and appealed to a wider audience than usual, which made me appreciate Royals and Riptide more than I appreciated Get Lucky. Get Lucky is still a top song, but I didn't feel it was as far above the rest in its field, if you get what I'm trying to say.

I'm a few beers down as over here its still Australia Day, so sorry if this makes no sense.

This is still probably a stupid view, but yeah, just my opinion.

Nah it's not stupid at all mate. I was just of the opinion that Daft Punk were an absolute standout even though that was sort of the 'in' music at the time. Each to their own.

First time I heard riptide I thought 'this is a top song', thought it was very strong and original lyrically. Getlucky took a long long time grow on me, very wishy washy lyrics and a pretty uncomplicated structure with one of the most marketable voices behind it in music today. Pretty meh all round I thought.

Plus riptide was helped massively by being an australian song and competing with two overseas songs. Being australian goves as much as a 5-10 percent boost v non australian IMO.

Only got 5/10 songs on the list that I voted for this year. Honestly main thing that blew my mind was Alison Wonderland making it in so high. I mean it's a genre that most Triple J listeners don't like + she can't even sing.

Anyway, a bit disappointed that I didn't crack a few more into the list, but overall I really liked the top 10 songs on this countdown. Had a great day yesterday.

I'm kind of on the fence.

I think all 3 were a class above anything else in their genre, the difference being that there was a fuckton more songs in daft punks genre than VJ or Lorde.

Not sure whether it should be a bigger achievement to stand out in a field of many, or to bring songs in not as popular styles to more mainstream success.

Not that they're really uncommon or unpopular styles but you know what I mean.

Did Arrows by Fences Ft. Macklemore not make the 100?

  11. Ged GEC King

Yeah. That one's baffling. One of my absolute favourite songs of the year.

  12. Julian BJ Taylor

Yeah I voted for it and as the day wore on I thought it must be pretty high. Once it got to top 10 I was baffled knowing it had missed out.

Don't rate Get Lucky really. Niles Rogers jamming 4 chords non stop while Pharrell alternates between a couple really basic melodies. It's not a horrible song, but Mark Ronson did the whole idea better in every way with Uptown Funk this year.

Royals was at least different in the way that the beat on it is incredibly minimal and the dynamics come from her voice and the harmonies.

Charli XCX is the best songwriter in pop at the moment though IMO.

Chet Faker is pretty meh. Triple j won't stop pushing him though.

  15. Reagan Wheelson RDP Wheelson

Triple J is just a shit station, tbh. Bunch of hipsters promoting bullshit.

  16. Julian BJ Taylor

    I couldn't disagree more.

  17. Lukic L Popovic

get lucky is a mad song. u cunts except jules are cooked.

i do rate uptown funk too tho.

chet faker is pretty shit, really nothing.

thought any of the top 6 apart from the actuall winner would've been deserving.

  18. Pretzel P Retzel

Do you want to expand anymore? I srsly think it's a really pedestrian song.

  19. Skippos SM Morgan

Yeah I'm on the fence. I really liked Get Lucky but I do understand why people find it simple - I think it's great though.

Uptown Funk in a similar vein is catchy but I don't particularly enjoy it at all - maybe just a little too 'poppy' for mine.

Agree with the Chet dislike though - I think he's an exceptionally talented musician and has a voice that can do some really good things but I don't particularly like his music, just feels a bit dull, slow, boring and waste of a good voice for mine. I think 1998 was his best song but still was average.

But then he covered Burial really, really well. I think he's solid when it's not his own material.
