Carney agrees two-year deal with Sharks

    Updated October 26, 2011 13:13:56
[IMG] Carney has been instructed to take advantage of his final opportunity.

Cronulla has confirmed the signing of Todd Carney on a two-year deal after the controversial star assured NRL boss David Gallop he will stay out of trouble.
Carney, sacked by the Sydney Roosters in September after breaking a team alcohol ban, will join the Sharks on a deal estimated to be worth $700,000 over the two years.
He met with Gallop on Wednesday morning at the request of the NRL chief executive, who reaffirmed there would be no more chances for the 2010 Dally M medal winner.
Carney has now been shown the door by two clubs, with his career at Canberra cut short in 2008 due to off-field issues.
"Today was an opportunity to talk to Todd about where he is at," Gallop said of his meeting with Carney and his manager David Riolo.
"(Cronulla is) making a big investment in him - the game is making big investment in him - he needs to take responsibility for that.
"Today was about encouraging him to take that opportunity.
"He's excited about being in an NRL club again and playing footy again, he needs to focus on that and avoid risky situations, and I think he understands that as well."
Carney's career was in limbo after the Roosters lost patience with him following a string of off-field incidents.
"I am really looking forward to this opportunity with the Sharks," Carney said in a statement.
"Preseason is just around the corner and the roster for next year looks very strong.
"I can't wait to get into training with my new team-mates as soon as possible."
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said he was confident Carney could return to the form and mentality which resulted in him being crowned the game's best player in 2010.
"I'm definitely excited to see what Todd can bring to our performances on the field next year," Flanagan said.
"We lost a number of games by less than a converted try last season and if his skill and ability can provide more scoring opportunities and more points for us, I can see it being a very positive year for the Sharks.
"The fact he kicks goals at a better than 80 per cent success rate is also an another plus in his favour."

How the fuck did they have so much space under the cap?

  4. Benny BS Read

Sharks are top 8 material next season now.

  5. Wilson SB Wilson

We had 200k left for next season which he's on, then his 2nd year we have heaps of cunts coming off contract, like Tupou.

  6. Old Mate M Perry

Sharks probs won't make the eight still and Carney will get de-registered before his contract expires.

Agreed with a lot of this.

Thing is, most of his shit was at Canberra. Apart from drinking, he really didn't do much shit at the Roosters. Thing is, I don't think he can get off the drink.

Carney goes to the club that already had the best depth in the halves in the comp. Bit odd

  10. Alec AD Funkotron

What does he care about depth for?

  11. Sultan Pepper HG Emm

    Not necessarily 'best' depth either.

  12. Speirz DG Speirs

Yeah, have any of them other than Carney even played finals before?

  13. SM MD Dorn

Best was probably poor choice of words. Deepest at least. They already had about 81259215 halves options

  14. Speirz DG Speirs

    Cuthbertson confirmed.
