Something has to be done

The crowd for Souths/Easts would've been much bigger on a Friday night IMO.

Yeah if I live in Randwick or Maroubra and have to be up at 5am for work there is no fucking chance I'm going to Thursday night football at Homebush.

The Thursday night explains why it wasn't as big as say, a Friday night but the equivalent match from last year was a Thursday night as well.

The location is obviously the main factor.

    Definitely.

If it was a Friday and ANZ was where the SFS is, I reckon Souths/Easts would've sold out.

As in 80k seats? No way.

I definitely think Smith's legacy needs to be making all clubs financially secure & improving crowds for him to be considered a success.

Expansion needs to be put on the back burners until after his first term which ends at the end of 2017.

Things that are in planning like a roof over the SFS, turning ANZ Stadium into a rectangular stadium & building a large Stadium out west are a musts if he wants to achieve the goal he set himself of average NRL Crowds of 20,000 by 2017.

Honestly think crowds are the biggest non-issue in the game. Bigger crowds are nice because a) they give games a better atmosphere and b) they generate a bit of revenue, but seriously, A is pretty superficial and B can be achieved many different ways. As long as the game's popularity is growing or at least holding steady overall then I don't really give a rat's arse how exactly people choose to follow it. It's a TV game, time to face facts.

IMO you still need an actual crowd providing an atmosphere to make it a success on TV.

Super League grounds are pretty much always at least half empty, which seriously detracts from the viewing experience IMO.

Origin, for example, wouldn't be anywhere near as attractive to watch if no-one actually gave enough of a fuck to attend at the ground.

Zero chance. They played on Friday last year at the SFS and it wasn't close to sold out, and that was with the novelty of Sonny Bills return.

The SFS is much easier to get to than Homebush (Although there is less parking) and it's most definitely a better ground to watch footy at.

They probably would have got close for that final round match up though. I definitely would have gone if it was at Moore Park.

This is what I'm getting at, Magic. This sort of attitude (not that I disagree) is rife.

Good crowds result in a far better product, there's no doubt in my mind. Not just the atmosphere but even though it's an overused cliche the players do lift in front of big crowds and I also have no doubt it's a large part of why they play the game.

When Crowe came out and said Burgess would've stayed in Rugby League if he was allowed to play SOO I think everyone missed the point. Sam Burgess didn't want to play in SOO, he didn't want exceptions made for him, he wanted to play on the biggest stages and compared to Rugby Union the NRL just wasn't offering that on a consistent basis.

League is a TV game and always will be but crowds will always be a massive part of the game to and given the steady path we've been on it's about time they got some attention 1) to improve the product & 2) to generate larger revenue streams for the clubs.

This isn't an example of a changing attitude though, it's an opinion I believe Cribb has held for a while along with quite a few other people on here.

If he formed the opinion in the last 6 or 7 years, then yes, it's part of the changing paradigm that I believe has been going on. Even as back as far 10 years I can remember the stirrings of people asking why bother going to games at all. It's really grown from there, in my experience.

I take it your impression has been different?

10 years ago the game was averaging 13-14k a game that's risen to 15-16k a game so it definitely doesn't support your theory that people are turning away from the game if that's how far back you want to go.

I think it does. An increase of 1.5k per game over 10 years is pretty shit if you ask me. And it plateaued in 2005 when the average was the highest it's been between then and now. There was a big jump between 04 and 05 from 14.5k to 16.5k. Since then, there's really been no growth at all.

There's been no sign off a drop off though which is my position, you're arguing that people are turning away from going to games not that support has stagnated.

Last years minor dip can be accredited to the poor form of QLD clubs especially Brisbane and to an extent also the Warriors. Crowds in Sydney were well up.
