Best way to do it is to have a genuine half, a genuine 5 8 and a diverse fullback and hooker with a lock or hooker that can cover a bit of the halves if neccesary. With another hooker on the bench. An ideal example of this would be if Penrith had Walsh at half, Graham at 5 8, Lewis at lock and Sammut fullback. With Iosefa at hooker and Aiton bench with 3 more forwards. That way if there's any injuries people can shift and cover easily. Coote>>>>>>>Sammut tho, I'm just using those types of players for the example, it's not what I think the side should neccesarily be.
Umm... are you trying to make a joke or something? You cannot be serious. Have you seen a game of rugby league in your life?
Have you? Honest, honest question, have you? The fullback does not have to be a good tackler, he's the full back. He organises the defence. He makes the least tackles. Even when there is a bust, he'll often just be beaten by a support player, and when he has the chance to tackle it'll often be a forward who he gets around the legs.
Also, the halfback is not there to make tackles. He's there to organise the attack. Even though he's often run at, there will be capable defenders around him to make the tackles. As I said, it's not important to have Halfbacks and Fullbacks who are great tacklers.
Can someone give me genuine reasoning as to why your Fullback and Halfback have to be great tacklers. If someone can give me a worthy answer, I'll eat the humble pie.
So you don't have a weak point in your defence. So they don't get targeted in defence. So your fullback can stop a player when they make a break.
Look @ some of the better halves in the game today though... Prince, Locky etc. They aren't great defenders, but they don't have busts made on them because the defenders around them are competent. They are solid enough to hold up, but aren't generally great. I'm not saying that they can be shit, but they don't have to be particularly good. Just good enough to hold their own. As for the fullback, most of the time they don't get direct 1v1s, they'll often use their speed to run down the person who makes a bust and make the tackle from speed more than anything. Half the time there is bust though, they won't end up being the one making a tackle because 1. They'll probably score a try if there is support 2. Most busts will come towards the end of the count, so wingers will be dropping back for kicks etc, being even better prepared for a bust. 3. Players from the line will occasionally catch up to the bust maker, giving the fullback extra support.
Got the impression that you thought they can be shit. My bad. I don't know where you get your stats from because they are shit. You want your fullback to be a good defender.
This one is probably my bad in interpretation as I'm making it seem they come off as un-important, but initially I was just saying that you don't need your fullback to be great as per the 1/2, because they aren't really picked on defense like a back-rower/prop occasionally.
Well then why the **** are you having a sook ? No one says that a halfback or fullback has to be a world class tackler.
